To Tip or Not To Tip?

How do you know if you need to tip your shaft or not?

I know if you want your shaft a little bit stiffer and have a lower trajectory, you should tip...
But does tipping improve your distance, control etc.?

What are the benefits of tipping an not tipping?

Thanks!
