Quick Club Making?

I have a quick question for my own knowledge as I am new to all the golf knowledge I am soaking up. I am getting a set of irons for this winter to start playing next year, so I am not making clubs yet.

However, I could see myself tinkering with some club making later on (I all ready know that is a bad idea because it is most likely as addictive as the game itself, but I know me and I have all ready faced the facts). When irons are +1" in length, is it that the actual shaft is longer, or there is a 1" long "adapter" under the grip. Or are these adapters only used to lengthen an all ready trimmed shaft.

Also, when you order iron shafts, do they ussually all come in the same length or are they different, i.e. all 41" length that I see. and if you want them +1" do you just trim less.

Well I know I confused myself here, but I think you get the point of my questions. (I really should just take the club making class at Golfsmith) Thanks in advace for any answers you pass on.

Re: Quick Club Making?

It depends on what you buy. If you buy 8 shafts, you will get 8 full length shafts, that need to be tip trimmed a set amount for each iron. Then you butt trim the shafts to get the finished length you need. If you buy a SET of shafts, they will come tip trimmed for you, and all you have to deal with is butt trimming to finished length. Shaft extensions are only used to lengthen a club that is too short. For +1" clubs, you just butt trim the club an inch longer than standard length. Preety simple once you do it. And I would recommend you go take the club making class at Golfsmith. Well worth the time and money. I took it years ago. and I think you'll learn all you need to know to build a set of irons.

You got one thing right, once you start tinkering and building clubs for yourself, it is very hard to stop. Its very addicting! So beware!

Re: Quick Club Making?

Especially when you find a bunch of wedge heads on sale for 3 or 4 dollars each. Hard to pass up a deal like that, knowing you'll need new wedges some day. Or some nice graphite shafts on close-out for 75 % off.
