I have an appointment for an Iron Fitting this Thursday. I have never been fitted for irons. I currently play Titleist 804 OS 3-PW,Steel. I have always bought my clubs off the rack. I am a Senior now and feel it is time to make the move to Graphite shafts and a CB (More Forgiving) head. I am leaning toward Ping G-10 Irons but am keeping all options open. I'm a 12 Index, straight with a slight draw, smooth swing with good form and tempo. The best part of my game is Driver, FW Wood, and Rescue 19* Hybrid. (Notice ALL Graphite Shafts) My irons are OK but not consistent. Wedges are good, Putting needs "LOTS OF WORK"! (Hence the 12 Index) The fitter looked at my irons and immediately said that he could see that I hit them toward the heel. Possibly too long and maybe wrong LIE angle. I'm 5' 7". This is all new to me so I'd appreciate any advice on what to look for, ask, etc., ie; (What about the shafts on my wedges?) The fee is $85.00, and he said I'd be swinging for about 1 1/2 hours. If I buy clubs through him, he would credit me $75.00 toward the new clubs. He was Northeast Regional Ping Fitter of the year in 2005 and has a good reputation locally here on Long Island. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks, Rony - Long Island, NY
You are doing the right thing. Hit a variety of shafts, in addition to clubheads. The shaft can make a big difference in performance for the individual and there is a huge variety of graphite shafts out there.
Get the irons that work best for you. Don't worry about brand name. Ask him if you should replace the 3 and 4 irons with hybrids, and if so, hit some of those as well. Ask about what kind of wedges would be best suited for you and how many you should carry. Hopefully you'll be doing an indoor/outdoor fitting, i.e., you'll be on a launch monitor, but hitting shots out to the range at the same time so you can see the LM results as well as the results of your ball flight and distance.
Have fun! You know you will be getting irons that are fitted to your game.
About to do the same. Well worth the money in my opinion. I am tired of clubs that aren't the right fit. I think anyone under a 15 should get fitted. I feel like a heel for waiting so long. Good luck.
Most of the time, you can get a free fitting only if you buy a set of clubs from the one doing the fitting. Other wise, the guy would be giving away his labor all the time, and not make any money. As it is, a lot of sneaky golfers will demo a club or set of irons at a local store, only to buy the same thing online for a cheaper price. Why should the store provide this guy with a free fitting and then have him buy someplace else? There's nothing wrong with trying a club at a local store to see what works for you, Just don't buy the same club online and expect to get the same results from the online driver as you did with the one in the store. Not likely to happen.
Oneputt hit it spot on... I always make my fittings free if they purchase the clubs from me but to be safe I charge an fee if they want to take the information and walk. He pays for my time and we are both happy.

So true...
Unfortunately, we found that many will pay for a fitting and STILL go elsewhere to a bargain source...and invariably, come back to us to modify their purchase because they didn't do it right.
So now, when we do fittings...we provide the customer not with an invoice, but a gift certificate....
We let them take our fitting info/recommendations to anyone they want for a quote....then give us the written quote...we then not only match the price, but then deduct the invoice/gift certificate for the fitting.....
In the long run, it saves EVERYONE time and money.
Seems like you win both ways. If they buy somewhere else, you get to charge them to adjust the clubs. If they buy from you, you make a profit on the club sale. Sounds like a good idea on your part, and a good way for the buyer to get a good price on a set of clubs that actually fit them.
