Welcome to Golf Rewind, Chuck. I hope you visit us often.
Thanks for the information about the carbon fibre heads. I guess I'll wind up having it done at one of the bike shops (if I go through with it). If I decide to do an all metal head, I'll get in touch, and maybe send you the design.

Re: Club Paint??

Lowof83: I understand your point about wear. I happen to have any article on re-painting club heads by the guy in charge of the operation at Golfsmith. They recommend automotive body paint for club heads. According the these guys, it's hard enough and long wearing enough to do the job. To be honest, I have no idea what kind of paint would be used to paint a motocycle helmet, but automotive paint seems to hold up pretty well to being driven around town for thousands and thousands of miles. Granted, some makes of cars hole up better than others, but I'd think an automotive paint supply store could sell you any brand of automotive paint you want to buy.

As for Powder coating a driver, the only problem I can see would be the weight of the head before and after. According to the information on the site, the powder coating is a good bit thicker than the original paint job. I don't remember the percentages given on the site, but I'd think it could make a difference in swing weight. And if you really love that driver, then I'm not sure having to deal with a heavier head would be a good idea. It may not be a problem, but I really don't know if it's worth the risk. If it was me, I'd definitely weigh the head before and after so I'd know about any changes before I re-installed the shaft. I'd also mark the shaft, so I could re-install the shaft in the exact way it was before I pulled it. Again, why take the risk of changing something that you hit so well?

Re: Club Paint??

I have one last question on powder coating a head, or painting it for that matter. As a machinist, I'm well aware of what can happen to metal when it's heated, so heating a head to 400 or 500 degrees could be a problem. I have no idea what the heat treatment requirements are for a modern driver head, so I have no idea of what might happen to the hardness or springyness of the head. And driver heads of made out of at least a dozen different alloys of titanium. so I'm pretty sure the effects of heating a head would vary depending on the alloy in use. With most steel alloys, you heat the metal up to a certain point with no noticeable changes, but at what point it does matter will vary. I can only assume the same holds true for the alloys in use for a driver or fairway wood head. It's not my intension to condemn powder coating a head. I'm just asking if anyone know for a fact what the effects could be of heating the head that much. All facts would be most welcome.
