I want to refinish some clubs with different colors but have never done this. Im not sure I want to mess with the actual grooves but I would like to do the numbers and logos. What kind of prep products and paint is best? I saw a wedge with a red, white and blue theme that looked insane. Its snowing here and I want to do something to my clubs if I cant hit em. Thanks
Paint used by the auto industry would be best. Over here there is a paint called plastikote,as long as the surface is clean and a proper primer is used it will go on anything. Ask for a hard wearing paint that is suitable for metal same goes for the primer.
Go to a hobby or craft store and get a variety of enamel paint sticks - kind of like markers, only they are filled with paint. Some people use nail polish.
As far as prep is concerned, make sure the area you are going to fill in is clean and dry.
Next step is to fill in the area with the paint. After it dries, you can clean any residue by wiping it with a cloth with some alcohol on it - it comes off easily and leaves the recessed painted area untouched.
Have fun - I usually touch up my clubs every Winter, and like to experiment with different color combinations on my putters.
Before you go to all the trouble. try to polish out the sky marks with automotive polishing compound. You can get it in any auto parts store to polish out old faded paint. Should work on the driver if the sky mark isn't down into the metal, just on top of the paint.
I know Chuck with Golfincolors.com has done a couple of my drivers...first he starts off by stripping all of the paint then he powder coats it (heats up over 500 degrees in an oven.)
You might want to give Chuck at Golfin' Colors Home Page a call or email. Great guy to talk to or deal with and I believe he would be glad to give you a few pointers.
Questions for the industry professionals:
I've got my "ultimate" driver, but I want it custom painted. Can GolfinColors do a head that has a carbon-fibre crown? I know what I want done, but I want it done to the club I'm going to actually be using instead of one that I'm just going to show off a bit.
Thanks Christian. Everything will be back to normal here as soon as I get my belly well again. I don't recommend a burst gall bladder to you bud.
Just so you know, I'm still going to be using those Integra hybrids you made for me for awhile yet. I'll be in touch when I'm ready for some new irons. I'm thinking a player's cavity with the same UST Proforce V2 95 gram shafts you put in the hybrids for me, but it's probably going to be a while before I'm ready for them, and I don't know how much swing speed I'm going to have lost after this surgery.
Lowof83; If Golfincolors heats up the head in an oven to 500*'s, I'm not sure I'd want them to do a composite head. I'm pretty sure it would do more harm than good to get it that hot. Just pulling a shaft can be a problem if you don't know what you're doing. Have you throught of calling a local motorcycle shop and asking them about painting your driver head. Some of those bikes are painted pretty wild designs. Might be able to get them to paint your head for you at a decent price. If all you want is a one color paint job, but in a special color, you might try a body shop. Tell them what color you want, and ask them to paint your head the next time they paint a car that color. That would save them a lot of trouble painting one small head, and you a lot of money. Worth checking out.

OnePutt,
I'm not wanting a single color. I've considered a company here that does custom motorcycle helmets, but I'm afraid the paint they use will not be strong enough with the removal of the headcover, and other abuses a driver head goes through.
I've also got another near-perfect all metal (beta titanium) clubhead I've considered using for the project, but I want it to be the driver I use, and not just a show piece. That's the problem. My current driver is the most forgiving, longest driver I've ever hit, and I've hit **** near all of the newer ones. It's the one I want to pull, and have whoever is in my group have bad thoughts. (Gotta love this game)

I seem to remember a thread on here where a guy did the painting on his driver head. I am not sure which thread it was or how to find it but if you could find that thread it might be a help in your quest. Hope you get better soon.
Hi Everyone and thanks Christian for the heads up. I powder coat, not paint each head along with doing custom design work. Carbon fibre heads cannot be powder coated since the oven must be at 400* and the resins get too funky. As to pulling shafts I use a local PCS guy to do all my work. If anyone has any questions or needs help please email me at info@golfincolors.com
Thanks,
