Use extensions or completely new shafts?

Opinions Needed

I have a relatively new set of irons on the way and they're mens standard in length and I'd like to know if you guys/girls advise against putting extensions in them or reshafting to the length needed?

I'm 1-1/2" over Mens Standard.

Re: Use extensions or completely new shafts?

I've used aluminum shaft extensions and they work fine. I added an inch to all my irons years ago, no problems at all. If the shafts fit you other than for length, no reason to pull the shafts and spend a lot of money on new shafts.

I second the extensions, as long as they're done correctly you won't have any problems.

Rgr. that. Just wasn't sure about the weight added with extensions. Thanks for the feedback.

Just so you know though that adding extensions will alter the swingweight of the club.

Re: Use extensions or completely new shafts?

Ugh. Well I had the extensions put in but I'm having a hard time adjusting to the new lengths. Hitting fat shots more often now and it's really discouraging. I adjusted my posture a bit upright but it feels like I'm standing too tall.

One more thing I"m concerned about:
These irons are cast iron (Wilson Pi5s) and my golf guy said he can't adjust the lie angle.... does that sound correct? They have to be adjustable!?

Most all irons can be bent some, so your irons should be adjustable one or two degrees. But to be sure, why not ask Wilson? They will know for sure.

Re: Use extensions or completely new shafts?

maybe it has something to do with what kind of heads they are.
investment cast vs forged.
i think i read somewhere that there is a chance of cracking or splintering in investment cast heads. don't quote me on that though.

Re: Use extensions or completely new shafts?

Cast heads are a lot less forgiving when it comes to adjusting them so I would believe it..

Re: Use extensions or completely new shafts?

They are cast heads. They can be bent but not as much as forged or some of the newer softer stainless metals. To bend 2 degrees will mean a 3 to 4 degree bend as stainless springs back a degree or 2 for a smaller net bend gain. Have the company or a reputable club repair shop do it for you.

Re: Use extensions or completely new shafts?

There bendable but I wouldn't suggest going any further then 2*. The best way to bend a hard cast iron is to heat the hosel and then bend. This will cause the stainless to hold its position longer and will not put hardly any stress on the clubs.

Hope this helps and let us know if we can help.

Re: Use extensions or completely new shafts?

Yeah, I received the email back from Wilson and they said it was not bendable.

On a lighter note though, I switched my grip back to 'interlock' and seem to be striking the ball well again so it's all good.
