Removing Ferrules to be reused

Hi I was wondering if there is any way to remove ferrules to be reused. I have an olset of Homma clubs one of which has a broken shaft and I cant get matching Ferrules.
Thanks

Re: Removing Ferrules to be reused

Depends how they were installed. If they were press fit when installed you may be able to get them off. I usually epoxy mine on so they are a little tougher to get off...

You can make a ferrule removal tool by taking a piece of hardwood and drilling a hole the diameter of the shaft about 3/4" from the edge. Then cutt a groove the same width as the hole to make a U-channel so you can slip the board over the shaft. The hole you drilled should fit snugly against the ferrule on the shaft. Put the shaft in a shaft vise and gently heat the ferrule with a heatgun (on low!) or a hair dryer. You don't need much heat, just enough to soften the ferrule a bit. Slip the board over the shaft snugly against the ferrule and tap it off with a hammer. You may have to reheat the ferrule a bit as you go -- don't use too much heat, be patient and go easy.

I've used this method to remove ferrules I wanted to save. It's worked about 90%+ of the time.

If the shaft is broken, just cut the shaft again just above the ferrule, and heat the ferrule in hot water for a few minutes and pull it off, If this doesn't work, try a hair dryer to heat it enough to soften it so it will come off. If it was put on with epoxy, you might be out of luck here.

Find out what size the shaft is. Then get a drill bit of that size and slowly drill through the center of the ferrule. Once you are through the ferrule, it will now be on th drill bit. Just pull it off and reuse.

Even if it is attached with epoxy, that is no problem. Epoxy can be softened with a hair drier or 60 watt light bulb. The epoxy will soften way before the ferrule melts. In extreme cases, I've split the ferrule and reattached it with the split where is doesn't show.

I might try that next time I want to save a ferrule. Most of the time it's not worth it, as ferrules only cost about 40 cents. I'll keep this in mind for when I have a ferrule I can't replace real easily, or I"m out of new ones.
