Reduce swing weight by changing grips

Here's a tip I learned from a top club maker/repairman at the PGA Tour Store in Dallas, Texas.
I took my dad's steel-shafted Wilson Dyna Power 9 iron in to be re-shafted with graphite because I wanted it lighter. I use light clubs with a swing weight of about C9 to D0.
He said you don't need to do that. Just put on a larger grip and see what happens to the swing weight. I said OK and he installed a larger grip I pulled out of the rack and guess what happened. My dad's 9 iron went from a D4 swing weight to a C9 simply because with the larger grip, the weight was more evenly distributed. There may be more technically to it than that but that's the jist of it. Put on a larger grip if you want to reduce swing weight. (If you can live with a larger grip)

In essence what you are doing is back weighting the club. But it is not doing what you originally planned on doing, lightening the club. The swingweight was lowered but not the weight of the club, two different things.

I agree, What you did was INCREASE the total weight of the club, not lighten it. That 9 iron is now a good 10 grams heavier than it was. And now, you need to re-grip ALL of his clubs so they all have the larger grips.

Re: Reduce swing weight by changing grips

Gentlemen: Thanks for the feedback. Like I said, I do not know the technicalities and you guys do so thanks for completing the mystery. I thought it was odd that just changing the grip would reduce the weight. (overall weight) Anyway, I will say the club feels lighter when I swing. I'm glad you responded, I would have hated to find out someone changed to larger grips without knowing the full story.
