I broke my 4-iron shaft and hate to pay $20 for labor to put a new one in, but I don't know how.
What would it cost me to buy all the stuff I need to do reshafting on my own? If I was every going to get it now might be the best time. Then I can use it any time I need new shafts or as a service to other people, who knows.
If you want to learn how to do this, I recommend you take a 1/2 club making class at Golfsmith. You'll learn how to build clubs, and what tools and supplies you'll need. For one club, it's not worth the $20 you'd pay for labor. A shaft puller will cost you a lot more the that. Most of them cost $100 and up.
Epoxy $3 to $20, depending on amount. $20 bottles will do for 120 clubs
Ferrules 30 cents up to $1 each
Tubing cutter for steel shafts. $10
Hacksaw blade to cut graphite shafts. $5
Grip tape 2 inch wide, 125 club size $10
Solvent Mineral Spirits $4 a gallon
Knife to cut off old grip $10
Micro torch $10 to $25
Shaft puller, This is the biggest expense, and you should really check out the Golfsmith catalog for prices as they vary for $50 to well over $200.
Yard stick to measure club length Couple bucks at a hardwae store.
If you want to adjust swing weight, you'll need a swing weight scale for around $75
Spine align shafts will cost you another $20 to $100 for a spine finder.
Half day class at Golfsmith on club making, FREE and get to keep the wedge you'll build.
That's not too bad. You might break even on reshafting an iron set, and you'd do better than that building a new set from quality components, and have a lot of fun DingIY! I might build me some blades this coming winter!
If you just build clubs, and not pull any shafts. you can save a lot of money on tools. If you have never built a club before, I'd recommend you take the 1/2 day clubmaking class at Golfsmith. I think it's still free, and you get to build a free wedge and will learn all you need to know about simple club assembly and what tools you'll need. I took the clase years ago and it was well worth the time.

Excellent point there! To build clubs all I am missing are the club 'ingredients' and the epoxy (and the advanced tools for spining and SW-measurement, which I may go without)! I will definitely give this a shot at the end of this season. Thanks again for spelling it all out!
If you want to build your own spine finder, I can give you a list of parts and instructions on making one for about $10 to $15. Well worth the time and money to spine align all your shafts as your clubs will play better if you do.
