Hi everyone, I've checked out the site and like that there isn't a lot of arqueing going on here so I registered and hope to gain alot of knowledge from you all. I have played twice in the last two years. I used to play at least once a week back in the '60s. I'm 66 and played on the 5th of July with my son and he's trying hard to get my back into it. We got in 9 holes before the rain and I finished with a 48. (easy course) I'm looking at getting some clubs and was wondering about the length of them. I know from reading here that height is not what you go by but I'm 5' 7" overweight and old, in that order. I don't have the flex I once did, but have always been atheletic. I didn't know golfing had got so technical. Can I play with standard club lengths or will they be a bit too long for someone my height? I played out of my son's bag and he has Taylor Made RAC 7irons and a great 'ole big 13.5* 460cc driver. I actually hit it straight and that surprised me because I had a terrible slice back in the day.
First off, welcome to the site. As for length, you might want to get measured and see what your wrist to floor measurement is. This is what most clubmakers go by to determine club length for a golfer. Can't tell much by your height, as most shorter people tend to have shorter arms, so the distance from the wrist to the ground can be the same for tall and short men.
So, if the distance from the wrist to the ground is 36", does that mean the clubs length would be the same, from the heel to the end of the grip? Since all clubs are somewhat different in length, which club should be the same length as the measurment mentioned above?
Clubmakers use the floor to wrist measurement to determine if a golfer needs standard length irons or not. If the measurement is within the normal range, they recommend standard length clubs, if it's longer, they go with longer clubs. 36" is the standard length for a steel shaft 9 iron.
See that!?!? I'm 6'1" and my wrist to floor is 35.5"...
There are some places online that will do a static fitting (measurements only) that will give you a general idea, but nothing is like the real thing with pro who measures both static and dynamic aspects...of course that requires something of a repeating swing, and if you are in the "standard" range of things then off the rack ought to put you pretty close to where you want to be and unless you are relatively serious about golf it ought to be good enough...
