I have just bought a PING G10 driver 2nd hand and the shaft has a lot of areas where the polyeurethane coating is flaking off. Somebody told me to use furniture wax on it but how do you get the original coating off without damaging the paint?
If it's just to top layer of clear coating that is peeling off your shaft, you might want to try cleaning the shaft with a good paint thinner and then spraying the shaft with a new layer of clear topcoat. Should solve the problem. May not look quite as good as new, but it should look a lot better at least.
I recommended the use of paint thinner to remove any oils from the shaft, so you could re-paint it with the clear overcoat, not to remove the peeling top layer you have. I don't know of anything you could use to remove JUST the top layer, that wouldn't also remove a few of the other layers of paint on your shaft. If you want to remove all the paint, then try aircraft grade paint remover. You'll have to go to an automotive paint speciallty store to find it, but it works wonders on hard to remove paint and epoxy finishes. I have no idea what it might do to the epoxy resins used to hold the graphite layers of your shaft together, so it might be a gamble to use it. You could try to sand off the chipped paint, but you would most likely cut into the graphics layer and make the shaft look worse then it does now. One last question, Did you use paint thinner, or laquer thinner? If the top layer is polyurhthane, you might have to use lacquer thinner instead of just a paint thinner. But again, it could make a mess of the paint under the top coat, and make a real mess of your shaft.
Yu can get a good poly carbonate cleaner...like those designed to remove scratches from windshields (I recommend McGuiers)///clean it as best as possible, then apply Liqid glass...but ONLY after you have a local club fitter inspect it.
