My woods are all "custom", and my wedges (KZG) are customs, but the iron set isn't.
I've been "building" golf clubs off-and-on for 12 years now as a hobby. One particular success story is a friend I built a custom set for about 7 years ago. He's spent thousands (literally) on OEM clubs since then, but always goes back to the irons I made him.
Unfortunately, I sold off my bender after an accident, and haven't made anyone a custom set since. I still play around alot with reshafting, but that's about all these days. It's just too expensive for a hobbyist to buy the necessary equipment for puring, and doing frequency analysis.
I'd like to have my irons pured just to see how much of a difference it might make in accuracy, but I can't justify the price right now. I hadn't thought about it, but when I regularly shot rounds in the mid 80's, it was with my custom fit DCI's, and later my custom fit Zing 2's.
Hmmm... Maybe it is time to start saving $$$ to have the irons pured and fit...
Try Innovexx Golf, they're pretty cheap and have been getting great reviews since in the last 12 months. There not really either an OEM or a compenent club. More like a fledgling OEM.
I'm sure you can get a discount buying through this site???
Yes he did as well as Phil Mickelson for a few tournaments. Phil liked them but at that time KZG had not really made a huge name and didn't have the $$$ to seal a deal.
From what I have read from quality component manufacturer's, (I do not have any names myself, just read this, but it makes sense), there are players from different tours that played quality components like KZG, etc, until they hit the big time and big advertising $$ were offered.
Cannot blame them for taking the $$. I read a post on another forum a few months ago that said that it costs most players $75,000+ a year, at least, to cover travelling and any other related costs to play tour golf. The advertising dollars paid to the tour players funds this. Can't say I would have turned it down.
I just believe that a tour player can play most any clubs, but your average guy like me, and most people I know, are just spending a lot of extra money unnecesarrily when they buy OEM's vs a quality componet, (not knock-off/clone). JMO

Believe you me I would take the money too. I have the KZG Gemini driver with an AJ Tech shaft and looooove it. And yes when I was going to try and qualify in 1995 for the PGA Tour it was a reality check on the costs. At that time I was looking at $1500.-2500. a week in expenses. We had Phil Mikelson on the show(tonight show/Leno) a few months ago and he said now it is up to a round figure of $5000. a week.Give or take a couple hundred. A lot of people are under the wrong idea thinking that PGA Pros get everything for free. Wrong they dont. Maybe a hotel stay here and there if it is a sponsor or a rental car (nissan open provides players with nissans) but for the most part it is on their dime. I do own quality component irons and woods and never buy a knock off say like "big brother" (do you remember that scam?)
I'm with you weitzel.

"Big Brother", that was laugher!!
You said Phil was on "the show"........... at the risk of sounding stupid or ignorant, I get the impression you work for the show?
Can't believe I'm up still, working on my books (accounting)!!
Kinda figured it was something like that.
I was stationed at Norton AFB in San Bernardino from 1977 to 1981. Attended a few Hollywood/Burbank show tapings. My first show attendance was "The Price is Right". I actually got called down, 4th or 5th one. When the interviewing directors talked to me and heard, GI from Cincinnati, Ohio stationed at Norton AFB, I was on.
My second show attendance was the "disco" hit show, "Solid Gold". Was a memorable night for two reasons. First, I was 21 years old, had a date that I thought was about 26-27 years old, turned out to be 38 years old... drop dead gorgeous!! The second, the "Solid Gold Show", had a fairly new comic as a show act and did some warm up too, a guy named Jay Leno. He was fantastic, had me in stitches. It has been fun over the decades watching him get to where he is, remembering when he was a new side act, little TV exposure.

The date?...............wow, what a night!
OK, back to my passion, GOLF!!
Man Solid Gold that was with Rick Dees right? Price is always a good show and the longest running in history next to Wheel a Fortune which I did back in the 80's and Hung out there as a kid when Chuck Woolery was the host and Susan Stafford was the lettergirl. Jay is still a great person and does a lot of traaveling on weekends to entertain troops, good man. 1 flaw ...he doesn't play golf d@#* don't hit the books too much with the numbers, it is bad for your eyes. You need more golf to rest them.
Late '70's, disco was big. I remember hiding/lying flat in the back of a hatchback with black carpet, under a black blanket with lawn chairs on top of it, with a 12 pack, sneaking into a drive-in theater to see, "Saturday Night Fever" in San Berdo. Nowadays, the shocks would be taking a beating with me in the back.
I was a rock and roller all the way, but the ladies were into disco, hence, I went where the party was at. You had to grow up in the 70's to know what I mean.
On the dance floor, the guys that worked for me in the USAF called me the, "White Sarge with rythem".
LOS11 above sure doesn't get it. Go to a brick and morter then buy it on EBAY cheaper? Wonder what business he is in and how he would feel. OEM clubs are made no different then your high end custom clubmakers like KZG & Wishon to name 2. The fit is the most important. Buying a club that is LIKE the one you demoed isn't getting the same thing. Shafts are different with the same label on them. Ask your friends who have been to a demo day if they got a club that hit just like the demo. A reputable dealer will weigh the components, check the flex profile of each shaft and group them. Also if LOS11 above didn't like the club or if it had a hairline crack and broke 3 swings later how much did he save?????? Pay the dealer for what they know and fitting you into the right equipment. Remember, Tigers driver is to what you buy in the golf store as Jeff Gordons race car is what you can buy at the Chevy dealer.
This statement is dead on the $. Once, I hit some demo titleist 981 gold irons that were wonderful...or so I thought. I even made an ace with one of them. I was sold! Ordered a set with identical shafts, grips, the whole bit. Never did hit them worth a flip! Sold them (on eBay)...for about 1/2 what I gave for them. The right head...whether snake eyes, wishon, etc...fitted up with the right shaft for you will be an enjoyable set of clubs. You pay less than 1/2...and laugh all the way to the bank when your buddies start paying you after your rounds!

So, between the money you lost on the resale of the Titleists, and the money you paid for the OEDs, it cost you almost as much as the Titleists cost you to start with? You could've had the Titleists fitted to you, and actually been better off money-wise, plus you would've had a set with some resale value.
To the clubmakers in our group, that is NOT meant as disrespect to you. I'm merely pointing out the obvious. If you've bought a set of irons that aren't what you expected, you can go to a good clubmaker and have them fitted, and still come out to the good.

I'm going to guess on some numbers here, I've been to the Second Swing shops and see ebay on occasion, there are highs and lows, just stating some real world "averages". New Titleist's $900 (steel or forges?)? New Wishon's $550 (forged)? Resale on Titleist $500? $600? Wishon's $250 (easily) Still looks like $300 minimum loss either way to me, and the Wishon's would have a quality shaft fiited to you from the start. How much does it cost to get rid of the $4 shaft on the Titlesist and put on a quality shaft, like the Wishon club had in the first place?
No disrespect taken at all, I too, am pointing out the obvious. This poor guy bought a set of irons that he "thought" was best for him according to Titleist.
