Currently I am playing with a family member's set of Knight clubs. I am planning on purchasing my own set soon and am debating of whether going with name brand clubs or component clubs. My uncle would build the component set for me. What is the best brand for irons, woods, etc. if I did go for components. Also, where is a good place to demo the component brands clubs? Thanks for your help!
good place for component brand clubs and to demo them is golfsmith for sure. some good irons and wood companies are just all the big names that you hear about, taylor made, cleveland, callaway, nike, titleist, cobra, mizuno, adams to name a few. its up to you to go demo a bunch of different clubs, you will find that different clubs work for you depending on your swing and just personal preferance. id say just go to yer local golf store and demo all the clubs you can. good luck, welcome to GR!
i started using my dads clubs and just recently got a set. i looked at all the oems everywhere but there were way past the price my parents would spend on me. besides, im just starting so i probably cant tell the difference between them anyways. so i just ended up going to big 5 and getting some wilsons (1/2 off because they were on display!). i like them. but yea most people here play name brands so probably most will tell you to get them. one guy recomended me pinemeadow.com. they sell replica taylormade, calaway, etc. the people who posted the reviews said they feel just like the real thing. like 9/10 of there iron sets are $125 and ones like $250.
Definitely check out golfsmith for component clubs they have there own brand, Snake eyes, XPC, I think a few more and you can demo them, Usually a decent iron club head from them is about 8-12 bucks + shaft and grip etc etc. But if your uncle can build them I would Definitely go with golfsmith alot of there Snake eyes stuff is nice. I demoed one of there new XPC Drivers a 450cc one with a Grafalloy shaft on it. Well I tell you it was about $150 or $160 and this driver was NICE...........But for beginner stuff like I said they have alot of club heads for 10 bucks which are real nice.. They even have pretty nice hybrid club heads.
My bag is almost all component (other than the putter) so I think I can weigh in a little for you. Make sure you go component and not CLONE, the difference is clear and easy to tell. Some of the clone companies are starting to come around and do better, but the main difference is component companie
s pretty much design/make their clubs based on their designs, it may be similar technology/idea, but not a COPY like trend.
There are tons of good component companies out there a few I like are:
Dynacraft (full sets can be had cheap here)
Golfsmith (nationwide chain that makes great products)
Hireko golf (acer brand is pretty good, I like the irons over other stuff)
SMT (driver comonents)
Bang (driver components)
Low pro golf (GREAT site that offers a big range of component stuff and thier own brand of irons/woods/shafts/putters which are great)
There are also a few club maker sites which are good to look at such as myostrichgolf.com clubmaker-online.com (both have links to other sites as well)
Do your research and figure out what you need. A gently used component set can be had pretty cheap on a few of the other sites I frequent, email me if you need anymore help. Bowlingnut17@hotmail.com
LOS11 above sure doesn't get it. Go to a brick and morter then buy it on EBAY cheaper? Wonder what business he is in and how he would feel. OEM clubs are made no different then your high end custom clubmakers like KZG & Wishon to name 2. The fit is the most important. Buying a club that is LIKE the one you demoed isn't getting the same thing. Shafts are different with the same label on them. Ask your friends who have been to a demo day if they got a club that hit just like the demo. A reputable dealer will weigh the components, check the flex profile of each shaft and group them. Also if LOS11 above didn't like the club or if it had a hairline crack and broke 3 swings later how much did he save?????? Pay the dealer for what they know and fitting you into the right equipment. Remember, Tigers driver is to what you buy in the golf store as Jeff Gordons race car is what you can buy at the Chevy dealer.
A couple of good responses that I'd like to reaffirm. pgapromike hit it dead on. There is a difference between components and knock-offs/clones, sometimes huge differences. A clone's specs tend/can be all over the board, and look like he** after some use compared to a quality component, or as I am seeing more and more, OED, or Original Equipment Design like Wishon, SMT, Infiniti, etc. Most OEM heads are pretty decent, it's the shafts that can get scary. Nothing I like better than popping a $400 OEM driver in my FA, connect a laser to it, and show the owner of the "OEM" how his $4 private label OEM shaft in his $400 driver FLO's compared to my $200+ OED driver that I fit for that person, and built with TLC for their swing. It's always a good laugh. The big boys have to create big $$ to cover the huge advertising budgets. JMO
PGAPROMIKE and BWeitzel are right. I too do clubmaking using Golfsmith components and dynacraft as well. Most important is to be fitted and these non-oem clubs will be just as good as an oem. Actually if you buy and oem that is not right for you then it is worth less than a component(think about it) I have a set of clubs that are all components(golfsmith&KZG) and I shoot scratch. Because they are FITTED FOR ME. I love to go to a course and join a group of people I do not know and hear about the enormous $ they paid for their OEM's and they can't hit the ball for sh@#. And at the end of the round 75% of the time they are looking in my bag and asking where to go for a fitting and considering selling what they got for a fitted set.
If I'm not mistaken didn't Nicklaus use a set of KZG irons at the British open one year?He was between equipment sponsors at the time.I'll have to find out the year but I'm sure he did.
I took the plunge last year and went for an SMT driver. I bought a 12 degree 455DB with a Graffaloy shaft, It's awesome, and it was £130 cheaper than my TM. The next set of sticks I buy will be component for sure.

Yes he did as well as Phil Mickelson for a few tournaments. Phil liked them but at that time KZG had not really made a huge name and didn't have the $$$ to seal a deal.
