New shaft for Taylormade R5

Hi all,

I need some further advice on a new shaft for my TM R5 (Draw, TM stock shaft with regular flex). My problem is that rather than a nice draw I have a nasty hook with this club. I have a quick snatchy swing and carry about 200 yrds. It has been suggested that my problem is due to the stock shaft being too flexible and having too much torque causing the club head to be too closed at impact - causing the hook.

Having posted another thread on this issue and also having looked at other posts I'm thinking of replacing the shaft with one that is stiffer and has less torque. At this stage I'm thinking of a Grafalloy Blue (regular flex) due to its low torque and stiffer feel.

Is my thinking correct - will this type of shaft help fix my problem?
Is the Grafalloy Blue a good choice?

thanks.

Thumbs up

Try this first: Go out and hit some balls (or play) while rotating your RIGHT hand ( if you're right handed) about 10 to 15 degrees counter-clockwise when taking your grip -- Of course, there could be a lot of problems other than this, but I bet it will kill your snap hook! It'll feel weird at first, but give it a few days if it helps and it'll become comfortable.

Well what is your swing speed and what kind of trajectory do you have?? Also why did you go for the R5 draw were you slicing before??

The stock R5 shaft has a torque rating of 3.3 I believe and the Graffaloy is 2.8 I mean it may help. The Grafalloy is definitely a stiffer shaft I would try that shaft first and try other shafts aswell the Aldila NV has a higher torque rating so that may not be for you.

On the other hand it can be the R5 in the draw that is promoting that hook or a issue in your swing.. I dont know ,never saw you swing. I would say go to a fitter and see what they say.. You can try the Blue shaft and also try adding some lead tape to the toe and see if that counters the hook.. If thats the case than like I said maybe the R5 draw is not for you ..

hi Fairbread- do you normally hit a slice or fade? IMO, R5 Neutral already has a closed face so no need to get the Draw configuration unless you really don't like your natural ball shape.

Fairbread, have you ever been fitted for a shaft or clubs? If not, get fitted first, it will save you time and money when shaft shopping.
