I recently bought a set of Mizuno MX-20 on E-Bay. Got them brand new for $199. Great deal!!! Here's the problem. They had stiff graphite shafts on them. My swingspeed is around 85-87, not conducive to a stiff shaft. I also prefer steel shafts. So why did I buy them? Because I figured I could switch out the shafts for less than I could buy these brand new with steel shafts. So here's my question. Are True Temper Dynamic Gold my best bet? Are rifle shafts worth the extra $$$. I would appreciate any recommendations for reshafting these clubs.
Rifle shafts generally hit the ball higher than TTDG in the same flex.
I haven't tried the "Tour Flighted" Rifles so I can't give a comparison there.
One other thing to consider is to maintain the same swingweight, the irons will be about 1" shorter than current. This will change the lie. After the clubs are assembled as you like them, you should have a "fitting" done to determine how much, if any, they will need to be bent.
hey jc, i am currently switching out my my dynamic gold shafts to Nippon shafts. Im looking for a more lighter shaft. They are being pulled from titleist 704cb clubs. They are steel but in stiff. If your interested let me know. They only have about 5-7 rounds on them so their fairly new. you can email me at cchoi31@gmail.com
I don't hit the ball real high right now. I could actually stand to get a bit more height out of my irons. Not sure with my 14 handicap the rifles are worth my money.

You should look into shafts with a lower kickpoint and a softer tip, this will help you get the ball flight higher. There are many shafts on the market with these characteristics, and they cost less then the rifles.

Hey, I hit rifle flighted tours player off a 16 and I have noticed a lot more consistency in my iron play since I have changed. I was played TM RAC LT's and switched to MP32's with standard Dynamics but have since switched. I liked the frequency matching in the irons and it has enabled me to get the 3 and 4 iron in the air better and I think I have added distance.
Personally, I think they are worth the money - and coming from NZ they cost me about $25-$30 a club.
What you will find (or what I have found) is my scoring irons do have amuch better boring flight then previously - but each to his won
I'm not sure if you can change the shafts from graphite to steel. I found the following in the FAQ section on the Mizuno website. It states that you can't go to steel to graphite, but I'm assuming you can't do it the other way either. I'm not a club builder but I thought I would pass the info along.
Can I re-shaft my irons that have steel shafts with graphite shafts?
Unfortunately no. Since they originally had a steel shaft they required a .355" taper tip and are weighted and designed for steel shafts only. Heads that require graphite shafts take a .370" parallel tip and are weighted and designed for graphite shafts. Both heads cannot be interchanged.

Sorry, but you can do it. You just need to ream out the taper shaft heads to a .370 and you can use unitized shafts. Make sure you study the charts on the unitized shafts, they require tip and butt trimming. There are also ways to add weight to restore balance, aka swingweight.
DG shafts are the gold standard in steel shafts. There is a new True Temper Tour Concept shaft which are pregressive tip stiff shaft. The long irons have a softer tip to get the ball up in the air then the shorter shafts....they are great shafts. The down side is the cost. They are expensive for a steel shaft.
My buddy assembles and builds golf clubs and he told me that it is possible to put steel shafts into my mx-20's that previously had graphite. My only fear is possibly very heavy swingweight. I understand Mizuno makes heavier heads on the irons that accomodate graphite shafts. When I put in the heavier steel shafts I will have some pretty heavy clubs. I may have to offset this by using the DG Super lites
