I'm 15 and almost 6'0". Right now I'm playing callaway X-14s with the off the shelf length. I want to make them easyer to hit and some one mentioned shortining the shafts. I'm thinking maybe 1". will this produce any negitve affects and do you thinkits a good idea?
Ive heard for every inch or so you take off the shaft, You take 3-9 yards or so off your distance for your game, I think. But then again the hybrid shaft lengths are pretty small and they still get the same length
I was having trouble with my driving accuracy two years ago, and reshafted a driver with a 43" graphite shaft... I had great success with it, i felt more in control of the club (a la 3-wood) and it helped me to have a more upright swing plane as opposed to the round-house that i have with a longer shaft (I'm 5'7") Just a few things to think about...
For the record, I'm back to a 45.5" driver shaft now... and the trasition back was not too painful.
hey Sioux, what is your wrist to floor measurement. For reference, I am 6 foot tall with 33 inch wrist to floor measurement and I play my irons -1/2 inches from standard and my driver at 44.5 inches.
At 6' you are already taller than any off the rack clubs were built for. Cutting an inch could also effect the lie of the clubs as well. I would recommend getting properly fitted rather than a random act of chopping your clubs down. IMHO.
I highly suggest that you do not cut them down yourself. Take your clubs to a club fitter and have them measure and tweak the clubs for you. Taking an inch off your shaft by yourself could change the shaft flex, and possibly move your kick point.
.. and 1puttpar.. he should be about average for a cally shaft lenght. Height is not the only factor in determining your shaft lenght, it is also your lenght from your wrist to the floor, etc...
I really appreceiate you guys' input. I was going to take them up to Golfsmith and have them do it if i decide to do it. I'm still debateing waether or not its wearth the around $100 its gonna cost (remember $100 is alot when your 15 and have no job yet)
Thanks
It should not cost $100. I had all my irons (including my wedges) cut down 1/2 inch and it did not cost more than $60. BTW, I had them save my grips and reinstalling them instead of putting on new ones which probably saved me about $50.

Thats correct. Unless you're playing 2 piece grips like Winns, they can easily be saved and reinstalled. I'm not a pro by any means, but I could cut down a set of irons and reinstall the grips in about an hour and a half.
well in the golfsmith catalog it says that to have shafts cut and new/old grips installed (need new grips because mine are all worn and different on different clubs) it costs $9.95. and i need my 3 iron through pw and 50,56,60 degree wedges cut. so it'll cost about $108.
