You could talk to some of the people where you play golf. I'm sure some of them re-grip their own clubs. You could also check with Golfsmith or Maltby's. They sell grips and all of the things you need to do this. They can also give you some written instructions on how to do it. I would check out their websites and send for their catalogs. It isn't hard to do but trying to give you good step by step instructions on the forum might be a little hard. Best of luck.

If you don't have someone who is knowledgable to show you how to do it, I would recommend buying the beginning clubmaking book from golfsmith. While it is an easy job, there are ways to do it properly and ways to ***** it up. After you have successfully done a couple, you will feel like a seasoned pro!

I did my first ones about 3 months ago, replaced worn out half chords with Oklahoma State colors from eith golfsmith or golf works, can't remember now. but i have always had mine done somewhere. I will do them myself from now on. Easy to do, lotsa instant gratification afterwards.

I haven't tried it yet myself, but I have looked at how. Check the component websites like golfworks.com. They have tutorials on just about every aspect of club building.

Greetings! I just regripped my first club (Ping Eye2 3-iron) by myself, and it went surprisingly smoothly. Considering I'm so new to club building, I was wondering if anyone could offer suggestions regarding a basic vise to bold on to my existing workbench. I can't imagine that bench vises vary in quality that much, but I'm guessing I shouldn't just pick one up from Big Lots. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for models, sizes, where to shop, how much to expect to pay, etc.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I'd estimate I'd reshaft my clubs no more than 2 times/year, so I'm just looking for something basic. So, I don't actually need something like these tools:

I just started regripping... I bought a small air compressor at Lowe's on Black Friday and have been "blowing on" my grips, which works great... I have done my woods and a whole set of irons for my fiancee. Plus it's just clean, neat, and quick!

I got an el cheapo clamp-on vise for $20 at Home Depot and the cheap rubber shaft clamp for the vise - works great for gripping.

i blow thw grip on also and love it, if i'm not happy with the grip, just blow it back off.

the best way to get the old tape off is to use a heat gun or a hair dryer and warm the shaft up (taped area), the tape will peel right off, it won't hurt the shaft either, but much easier and quicker than scraping.

IMO air compressor is the only way to go! No mess, takes little time, and like Mikey said, if you don't like the alignment, or whatever, they come right back off!

I jumped in feet first and did my entire set this spring/early summer, and they came out just fine. It is a bit intimidating, but I think once you do it once and pull it off, you'll do it yourself forever.

And trust me, I'm anything but a handyman.

I've even left the tape on as long as it was relatively intact after cutting the old grip off...

Another question though... Anyone had any success in getting "normally-installed" grips off without cutting? The air compressor didn't work, they're on too tight, though I have had success doing that on other clubs. The shafts in my irons and particularly my hybrids are too long, but the grips are pretty new! I will cut them all off and spend $50 on new ones if I have to, but I'd rather not. Was contemplating "injecting" solvent down the sides with a needle and syringe and then trying the air compressor. Anyone else have thoughts?

i've never tried it, but i suppose if you have plenty of time and patience, it'll work.

If anything will work, that will... Good luck, and let us know how it turns out! The only factory grips I've removed with the compressor was on a putter, and it came off fine.

Factory grips came off my old cheapo starter irons, and also off my new HiBore driver... These Winn Excels aren't budging though... yet.

I haven't found a grip yet that I couldn't get off with my compressor, although some are really tricky, and I've had a few hairy moments where I just about blew the grips up. You're supposed to use a protector sleeve but I just use my hands and do it carefully.

Just use a touch more pressure (maybe 40-50psi) and do little bursts until you get a small bubble. I squeeze my hand over the bubble so it doesn't get too big and gradually work the bubble down the shaft. If you can get the bubble to the end so it comes out at the bottom of the grip, it's all sweet from there. You've loosened it and with a bit of jiggling it comes off the normal way.

I once nearly blew up a golf pride new decade doing this, and in the end I had to roll it up a bit at the bottom to get the bubble out, but I eventually got it. I thought the grip would be knackered, but all I had to do was stretch it down the shaft a little more when I reinstalled it, and it was sweet as. The guy I did it for is still using it to the best of my knowledge, and I'm sure he's glad I was able to reuse that grip.

That's the worst that's happened. Most of the time I have no problems. However proceed with care, I accept no resposibilty if someone injures themselves doing it this way!
