Well a standard driver shaft is around 45 Inches, and then down to a lob wedge is about 37-38 inches. You will most definitely need to find out excactly before doing any work your best bet would be to check with your local PGA pro.

Unless you are over 7' tall, I think most wedges are around 35 inches.

For the amateur/beginning golfer, does shaft length matter that much? Or would the standard shaft that comes with the clubs be suffice?

The reason I ask is because I want to know if its worth spending the money now or if its smarter to spend the money after I become more consistent.

You can go to the Ping website and do a static fitting, it is based on you wrist measurement to the ground. It will give you a general idea how long your shafts should be. The best bet is to get fitted, you will know your shaft length and the lie angle you need at that length, shaft flex, kickpoint etc. Much better info if you are going to custom build your own set.
