I really don't remember. I was about 13 at the time (49 now). We lived way out in the country. The nearest course was 15 miles away. Nobody in my family played golf. But for some reason, I thought it'd be cool to buy this starter set of golf clubs (Wilson Johnny Walker Cups). It was 4 years later before I ever set foot on a course. By then, my brother had started playing a little. Later on, my mother caught on, then my father.
If I'd known how much money I'd be spending over the years on golf, I'd have stuck with tennis! :D
I played a bit in High School, but really loved Volleyball and Basketball. Later in life, as I discovered being 5'11'' and white, not being able to jump out the Gym, I had no professional future in the games I loved. I was 30, starting to ache a bit after playing, and a friend said "You have to go on our Myrtle Beach trip, it's the most fun you will ever have."
I had no clubs, hadn't played in 10 years but loved to have fun with my friends. I went on the trip, had the best time, and even managed 2 birdies enroute to my 100s and 110s scores. It was all it took, 1 good shoot, and one good hole.
1000s of dollars later on clothes, clubs, balls(lots of them) I find that one great shot, even on a day when I am playing horrible, it brings me back every time!
My dad played college golf and missed being in the '57 US Open by 1 shot. My oldest brother had a D-3W-3-5-7-9-Putter set and he wasn't using it. So, my Dad took me to the local muni and I started going to the summer camps every year from the age of 7. I went to those camps every summer until I was 12. Then, we moved to a house close enough to that course that I could ride my bike. So, in the summers and on Saturdays, I would be on my bike with my golf bag strapped to my back riding about a mile to the course, where I would stay until dinnertime. I would occasionally shag the range for the pro and he let me hit free range balls as longed as I shagged my own.
I can blame it all on Myrtle Beach. A group of us from college went to Myrtle Beach our senior year. That first year it was all about booze, sex, and the beach. Back then our idea of golfing was a little miniture golf after dinner to walk off the meal (and it was too soon to hit the bars). We have been going back to Myrtle Beach for many years, but somewhere along the way most of us have picked up clubs and gotten rather serious about the sport. These days golf is in our top 3 or 4 reasons to go to Myrtle Beach.
When I was 18 my cousin and I were given my Uncle's old clubs so we started going to the driving range and playing on the local Executive course. Too bad I couldn't afford to take lessons at the time but we had fun and now at 53 and several lessons later I am still having fun and can afford good clubs but those 1960's bladed irons with leather grips are still in my backyard storage shed. Maybe I should take them to the range one day just for a blast to the past.
P.S. I wish we were living closer to each other so we could have a golf rewind tournament.
Bye the way Victory do you have stickers or other thing like Golf Rewind balls for sale?
Never had an old man around and my uncle was the closest thing to a father I ever had. He golfs religiously, and because of that, I started. I couldn't be more happy with my decision to start!
I did it just to prove I could, I think. Found out I couldn't and (after a 10 year break) wound up determined that I was going to break 100. Now, I'm determined to break 80, but not so determined that it's going to keep me from enjoying the round.
The girlfriend is a golf phenom...junior national champion, full scholarship for college. 0.2 handicap, etc etc etc...so needless to say she's good. Well I wanted to get into the game she loves as it's always gonna be a part of her life. First time we ever played 18 holes I was 30+ over par. Since then I haven't shot over 100 after many lessons from her at the range and on the course
I started out when I was 10 years old and would ride my bike to the local course and play 18 a day all summer. Too bad all that playing has not transfered to my current level of play. My parents knew where I was and knew that I would not get into trouble when golfing! You have to do something when your not able to play hockey in the summer!!
