I will be keeping the statistics and points for a new fantasy game for the 2008 PGA Tour season. Any GR member is welcome to participate. Here is a list of the rules.
#1. GR members can join the contest by picking a team of 6 PGA Tour players whose world golf ranking (WGR) adds up to no less than 100 (use this link http://www.pgatour.com/r/stats/2007/186.html). This roster will be constant for the season, so if one of your players isn't involved in a tournament for a given week, he will earn no points. Roster submissions and changes are due by 11:59 PM on January 3rd, as the first PGA Tour event officially starts on the 4th (Mercedes).
Example that totals 100:
Tiger Woods 1
Jim Furyk 3
KJ Choi 10
Scott Verplank 24
Retief Goosen 25
Charles Howell III 37
#2. All participants will earn points equivalent to the FedEx Cup Points that their roster of players earn each week. The total of their players' points will be their score for the week. I'll track the scores from week to week so GR members will know how they fare against their peers throughout the contest.
Example of a weekly score of 6819:
Tiger Woods - 4500
Jim Furyk - 0 (did not play)
KJ Choi - 1240
Scott Verplank - 0 (missed cut)
Retief Goosen - 837
Charles Howell - 242
#3. The sum of participants weekly scores will be added into one massive score that will determine the final outcome of the contest for the season. The contest will come to a close on the Sunday of the Tour Championship presented by Coca Cola.
Please see the thread in this area called "Idea for a game" which will be closed anon. Other participants' comments and teams are listed there.
Post your teams here or PM them to me. Periodically, before the onset of the season, I will verify all of the folks from whom I've received rosters.
Points earned are based on the FedEx Cup Points, thus European and other tour competitions will not count towards this contest. I'm not biased against other tours of the world, but for simplicity's sake, I stuck with the US PGA. Tracking people's rosters for a few dozen weeks is going to be challenging enough without converting euros to dollars and such. The exception is obviously the British Open.

Martini - Since we're using the world standings, I think all the tours should be counted - I know it's more work for you, but it's more equitable. Why would we choose some of the international players if you're not going to include the other tours? If you look at it, guys like Rose and Singh are near the top in world standings including those tours. Perhaps you could rethink the format of the game before we start. Otherwise, I think everyone will be choosing people who play mostly on the PGA tour in the US.
Looks like Diane wants to do the numbers on this one. So Diane what would you use as the common denominator. Martini is using Fed ex cup points which are not on the European tour. Would you go with dollars and convert the euros from the EPGA events. In that case people would still be going with PGA players because of the low payout for alot of european events. Do you include the Asian tour so I can pick YE Yang and convert the yens to american dollars. Lets talk about the conversion of the dollars because I'm sure that there will be big prizes in this pool do we convert the currency at the end of the day of the tournament or the following day if its a Sunday. Lots of problems in what you say. Keep it simple Martini I applaud you for attempting what you are its a lot of work. Thanks for the efforts.
Trust me, Diane doesn't want to do the numbers. You missed my point - I was thinking of players like Peter Lonard who goes back and forth and Lee Westwood, who in past years won the Order of Merit in Europe, but continues to play mostly overseas. Lonard is a very good golfer and Westwood is a great golfer. I was not referring to the more obscure players because I assumed no one would pick them anyway.
As long as we know the rules going in, it makes no difference to me. I picked my group based on Fed-Ex events. If someone wants to take a chance on someone in the Top 100 who only plays the majors, that would be their decision.
Diane, all Bluenoser (I too can refer to myself in the Third Person)was trying to get across is what you propose would be very difficult to keep track of and would require a plethora of rules to maintain. Either play the game as offered or don't. Dont try to change that which you take no ownership of. Dont forget though - I love ya.

I was just trying to understand why we would choose based on world rankings, but points would be based on FedEx - it didn't make sense to me. I can play as proposed, but am going to change my team.

Way too hard to track the European PGA, Japanese PGA, Austalasian PGA, etc... I would have to arbitrarily assign points values for other tournaments, plus track 100 more events. We're sticking to the US PGA. Strategically picking your team might include checking to see how many US PGA events your perspective team members have played in seasons past.
As far as using the WGR, it is the simplest way to pick a roster. More than FedEx Cup Points in '07 and the '07 money list, the WGR give us the truest rankings of all the best players in the world.
