When I was stationed in Japan our course was about a 45 minute drive from were we lived. We had a standing foursome who played every Saturday and we would all ride together to the course. It never failed that we would start talking smack about how bad we were going to beat each other and take each others money. That particular day we decided to play a new game called the PGA stats game. For every PGA stat (fairway, greens, sand save, birdie, long drive)we would get a dot worth 25 cents. I had a particularly good day (66 with 8 birdies) and we were in the snack bar settling up the bets. I had 42 dots and I tell one buddy that he owed 12 dots ($3), my other buddy owed 16 dots ($4). Our other buddy chuck didn't have such a good day. Chuck was the kind of guy we have all played with before. He hates to lose, buys the latest clubs, buys the latest drivers, the most expensive balls, but never practices. I look over at him and could hardly contain myself, I shook my head and said, Chuck, Chuck, Chuck, you owe me 42 dots. In a huff he gets up reaches in his pocket and throws a 10 dollar bill down and storms off. As he's walking away I holler over at him and said, "Hey Chuck, you still owe me 50 cents." My other two buddies just started rolling with laughter. All I can say is it was a long drive back home and we never played the PGA stats game again.
Just noticed I'm too late to enter, but this is a funny story anyhow.
Was playing in a 4 person scramble, and we were coming up hole 5, a par 5. One other guy and me sliced our drives over into hole 9's fairway, another par 5. We were going to pick our drives up. Another foursome was coming up hole nine in the opposite direction. The left side of hole 9 is the course boundry and there-fore out-of-bounds. We walked across hole 9 by the fence to get out of the way of them hitting their second shots. The first guy gets up and hits a low duck hook that came right for us. My buddy and I hit the ground and hear a loud "whack". The ball hit a fence post and went flying back at the foursome and they all hit the ground. The guy gets up and sheepishly says he'll go back and get his ball which is now about a 100 yds. behind them. One of his partners smarts off and says "No, you better leave it, we might have to play it." He then gets up and pulls his shot out-of-bounds. Everyone laughs. The third guy gets up and hooks his shot out-of-bounds. Not much laughing this time. The last guy gets up visibly nervous and proceeds to white knuckle his shot out-of-bounds. They ended up going back a 100 yds. to play their 3rd. My team ended up winning the tournament. That was about 10 years ago. Played another tournament down there this past Sunday, and people were still telling that story.
We all picked our favorites and the name that was drawn is Kreth!!!!
Woah! Usually my luck is limited to winning a dollar every 6 months or so on the Lottery. This was a cool idea for a contest, and I had a lot of fun reading the other stories. PM to be sent shortly...
