Shaft Selection

I have only been playing for 4 months, but I'm really enjoy it and know I am going to stick with this game. I presently use a horrible driver, and am in need of an upgrade. I am contemplating the TM r580XD - I have yet to demo it. Regardless of what I am looking at, I realize that the shaft for something like a driver is huge, yet I know nothing about driver shafts. If I were to get a TM r580XD is there a shaft(s) you could recommend for approx. my skill level?

My SS is about 80-84, but will be moving up, as I am young and like i said, just getting started. I have a tendency to slice, but I am correcting it. I use a stiff shaft on my irons, but I am not sure if that has any bearing on my driver. Any help would be appreciated thanks - I was referred to here as the best place to ask about this. thanks again!

* Flex

+ Your shaft flex needs to match with the speed of your golf swing. A shaft with more flex helps the ball fly farther.
+ There are five general levels of flex in shafts: L (or Ladies), A (or Senior), Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff.
+ Beginners and players with less powerful swings will benefit from a more flexible shaft
+ An average player with a swing speed of 75-90 mph, and should look for a regular shaft
+ Players with powerful swings - in the 90 -110 mph range - should purchase a stiff or firm shaft. This will provide a stiffer club for more control.

Choosing the right loft

* The greater the loft, the greater the angle on the face of the head and the more control but less distance
o Slow swing - 11.5-16 degree loft
o Average swing - 9.5-11 degree loft
o Fast swing - 8-9.5 degree loft

Choosing the right length

There are 3 basic club lengths on the market today.

* Traditional
o An average length of 43-44 inches, comparable to more traditional clubs
* Mid-length
o Generally 45 or 46 inches long. Slightly longer distance potential and weight is comparable to older clubs because of lighter weight shaft materials.
* Long
o At lengths of more than 46 inches, these clubs provide the potential for longer shots, but at the risk of substantially less control

Choosing the right fairway woods

Fairway woods are increasingly popular as an alternative to both drivers off the tee and to hard-to-hit long irons such as the 2-, 3- or 4-iron. Three factors are involved that make fairway woods a preferred club for many golfers.

* The average player feels better standing over a long fairway shot with a longer, lower profile wood rather than the harder-to-hit long iron
* A lower center of gravity makes it easier to get the ball in the air out of the fairway, rough or sand
* The larger club head compared to a long iron provides more distance without overswinging, increasing control as well as length

Fairway woods vs. long irons

Here is a simple guide to replacing a long iron with a fairway wood.

* 5-wood = 2-iron
* 7-wood = 3- or 4-iron
* 9-wood = 5-iron

tyrath,

What is your good shot tendencies?

Bad shot tendencies?

What would you say your current ball flight is? (high, medium, low)

What is the current club you are using now? (name, loft, shaft name, shaft flex)

Would you consider yourself a aggressive or smooth swinger?

Do you get alot, medium or alittle roll with your drives?

answer as many of these as you can and I will point you in the right direction on shaft selection.

I'd get either the stock shaft shortened half an inch at least (the stock shaft on those is 45.5", which I believe is half an inch too long) or if you can afford it, a soft tip shaft like the Aldila NVS, which will help you get the ball flying. At least the 10.5* loft, as more loft will help you keep the ball straighter and will also help you get more distance. Definitely regular flex shaft.

Medium lofting shot, good amount of back spin, little roll.

Bad shot tendencies?
As of now, hitting a bit fat - and accuracy issues

medium

no name - approx. 10.5 loft - no idea - regular

aggressive

medium/little

answer as many of these as you can and I will point you in the right direction on shaft selection.
Thanks a lot! Really appreciate it.

With the answers you have given me.... I am going to suggest a shaft that has a mid/soft profile but somewhat tip stiff. This will allow you to swing aggressively at the ball and keep your spin rate down.

AccuFLEX Evolution Lite R-Flex
AccuFLEX Icon V2 R-Flex
UST Proforce V2 65 R-Flex
Grafalloy ProLaunch 65 R-Flex
Aldila NVS 65 R-Flex

Hope this helps and let me know if you have anymore questions..

Thanks to all that participated in helping answer the question.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help and guidance. Just one more little question...could you possibly explain what "mid/soft profile" and "tip stiff" mean? Just so I have some idea of what I am looking to buy and what it means. Thanks again...

With your swing speed and swing type it is best for you to have more of a soft feeling shaft to help create extra club head speed. That is the reason for a mid to soft profile which will allow the shaft to flex during your swing but to make sure your spin stays down and that your shaft has a quick return at impact I suggested a stiffer tip.

Short answer.... Let me know if you need anymore explination
