My G5 - the jury is still out!
(I posted this in another spot before realizing this thread)
Here's the deal. I hit the Ping G2 last fall (8 deg/stiff) and absolutely loved it, but couldn't afford it until late this spring. As you probably know, they were superceeded by the G5. After discussing the G5 with a local store and reading up on it, I purchased one (G5 / 9 deg/ Pro Launch 65 Stiff) in late April.
Since using it my handicap has gone from an 8 to a 14. I'm hitting very few fairways. I normally have a natural draw to my swing and the G5 is square faced, but I can't stop hooking this thing. The clubface appears to be slightly closed, but according to Ping it should be square. I've had several friends of mine and one pro look at it and they agree it appears to be closed.
I sent it back to Ping on Saturday and should have some answers by the end of the week.
Now what's really strange about this one is this. I noticed a Ping "Club Fit" van at a local golf store/driving range so I thought I'd speak with one of their reps. He gave me the usual "you may be lining up with the grip logo" and "your shoulder may be flying open prematurely". When we finally disqualified those from the list, he recommended I hit one of his demo clubs that matched the one I own. He said if I hooked it like I hook mine we'd know it what the problem was.
So I took his challenge and hit about 23 balls. All of them went either dead straight or had a slight fade to them. At this point he said there was definitely something wrong, but couldn't guarantee that I wouldn't get the same club back with a note stating that it checked out fine.
Not quite what I expected to hear. I'll keep everyone posted on where this goes.
