Just tried out the new G5 driver today and to be honest with you could not tell the difference between it and the G2. The Ping rep was telling us that it produces 250 less RPM on a 100 MPH swing on a 10 degree but I'm not sure anyone other than a PGA Tour Ping Player would notice a difference.
I did like the fact that they made the line up half moon thing much thinner.
Just got my G5 3 wood today, hit it at the range tonite. Sets up very well, easy to hit high or low, good feel and sound. Just a tad bigger than the TM V Steel, Cally BB, and Cobra 3 woods.
Price was $209 US, same as Golf Galaxy. Didn't price the G5's because I'm keeping my G2, but I recall they were going to be the same price as the G2's.
I hit this driver and didnt like it, for some reason I like the G2 better. The G5 seems to hit the ball really high fast, the ball almost jumps off the face up instead of out. Maybe Im just weird!!!!!!!!!!!!
so does this club help slow swingers get the ball in the air? my dad is looking for a driver to help get him more carry
Yep I would say its a good club for that....i personally didnt like the fact that it did jump off the face and get high but I hit a 8.5 loft and the only G5 I could hit was 9.5.
I just played a round Ping G5 9* with a pro launch shaft and a Pro V1x ball.
Ball Flight: It is what you would expect with the Pro Launch soft tip…It is a high ball flight. I was hitting a 9* driver and I was hitting them high. With a 9* loft I should have been hitting medium to low bullets but I was hitting high bombs.
Feel: It had a good feel
Sound: Loud about sums it up. No wonder they call it a “Ping”, it had an ear piercing high pitch sound that after the round it hurt my ears. The only club louder is the new Cobra and you better wear ear plugs with that driver.
Control: I hit it too far left a lot. The Ping G5 has a closed face but at least 2*.
Looks: The head has a large budge in the rear….I am assuming to move the weight back. It looks like the R5 D and the new Nike SQ in that respect. The sole plate looks like a bubble or the top of that old car called the AMC Pacer. I did not like the half moon alignment aid. It looked pained on and was hard to see in bright sun light.
Distance: It was long. I bombed one 310 yards so length is not an issue with this club.
Over all not a bad club but not great for the price.
I have always been a fan of Ping golf equipment (look at my sig!) I was less impressed with the G2 because I didn't like the way it felt coming off the clubface. I think the G5 is very similar. Either way, I still think it's one of the best driver's on the market. It was our top seller in the pro shop this year. All of our customer's have been pleased with it. We have already sold a couple G5s
I enjoyed my G2 this season. I traded in a 983 K for the G2 very early in the season. Great club. I'm sure the G5 is a quality club, too.
I used Titleist drivers (983 K and 975 J) before the G2. Overall, I think the G2 was easier to hit and I probably hit more fairways compared to the Titleist drivers. It reminded me of a Big Bertha I had years before.
