I love this driver! The shallower and wider face allow me to tee it lower and play it like a three wood. My driving stats have significantly improved as well in both fairways hit and distance gained. This driver is very forgiving and I wouldn't take anything for it. The looks and size don't mean a darn thing when I'm hitting this well with it.
That's Rediculous, I'd really like some more critiquing of this driver.
You asked for it, you got it. Nike SQ 9* vs. TM R580XD 8.5*:
If this is the "best" Nike has to offer, don't waste your time, or your money on it. My 2004 R580XD (in the simulator) was carrying 15-20 yards longer, and with greater accuracy.
*Note - The Nike did have "Demo" on the shaft, so maybe this isn't a final production model. If it is, I feel sorry for anyone who shelled out the $$$ for one.
***Your opinion of this driver, and your results may vary, but it's not for me.***
Great driver....long and easy to hit. It was longer then my R5 with the same shaft. Off center hits are still long. It has a very good launch angle. The large head just says "swing hard" and the ball will fly far.
In this link is my review of it... keep in mind that this was over 20 or so balls, and my feelings toward it may have improved over time (eg. getting used to it, or actually seeing it fly, rather than it hitting a net 15 yards away)... one thing I forgot to mention is that I hated the grip on it... if i was ever to win one, or be signed to a contract with Nike... (the only way you'd ever catch me with this driver... i sure won't be shelling out for one) the grip would be cut off immediately, replaced with a V-55 Cord.
I have got to play a few rounds with the SQ Max 460cc now.
Looks: It looks big. It is almost as wide as it face is long. After a round I got used to the looks. The face looks closed but Nike told me it is square.
Feel: It feels a little firmer then my R5. Taylormade drivers have a soft feel to them. The Nike is a little harder feel. Not much harder but if you hit Taylormade’s you will notice a difference. On miss hits the feel does not change that much.
Miss Hits: This is the longest club I have ever hit on a miss hit. I hit a 260 yard shot off the toe. This club is way longer than my R5 on a miss hit.
Distance: This is a long club. I use a control shaft and I was hitting them 290 on the range and I hit one 303 on the course. My avg. was about 280 because of the fairways. It is about 5-10 yards longer then my R5. The reason I believe is because I was getting a higher launch angle with the SQ then my R5 which meant longer distance.
Forgiveness: This is the most forgiving driver I have ever hit. Its MOI has to be very high because you have to really have to have a bad swing to mess up a shot with this driver.
Price: At 299.99 new it is very good deal for a new stick. The price point is very competitive to the other big OEM’s.
I personally have not hit it anywhere but the driving range, but I played with a good friend of mine yesterday who had it. His driving is usually the weakest part of his game, like I am talking 4-5 fairways a round hit. Yesterday he hit it further, but more importantly he put more in the fairway. When I hit it on the range for a few minutes it seemed to me the sweet-spot was bigger, and you don't have to use an incredibly long tee to tee it up (like with my Taylor Made). My TM goes far, but this Nike seemed to give me more control.
this is one of the ugliest clubs i've ever looked down at... yes its long, but i dont feel comfortable hitting something that ugly... trust me, tiger woods isn't playing the same NIKE SASQuatch that all you kids are hitting, but hey, whatever works for you.. truthfully, the crown of the club needs to be shrunk a couple cc's.. this is a double bogey for me... TM R7 TP-thats whats up.. i'll hit it past anyone of you with the nike... haha bring it
This thing is awesome. I judge clubs based on things that matter, like performance, not aesthetics.
I played the r7 HT before this and the SQ blows it out of the water. Longer and much easier to hit. Most of the top drivers today will go long when you make good contact with the sweet spot, what puts the SQ ahead is how far mis-hits go.
I've only played 3 rounds with it but i've already set 3 personal records on different holes of my home course for longest drives.
I hit this driver at the same time I was testing the Cobra 454 COMP, I liked the Cobra much better.
I thought the Nike was harder to hit than the normal 460cc drivers due to the shorter clubface.
