How does this international man of mystery keep coming out with heads that seem to get better every time?
When I first spoke with this guy they call Almo, I told him that I really liked his Bang-O-Matic driver (all time best seller) and from there we went to the Bangster (which I hit for almost 2 years (AccuFLEX Icon V2)) but it definitely held up to its hype and still is a strong seller (very forgiving). Then he goes and makes a new company called Geek Golf and the first response out of my mouth was “are you sure about the name?” to which he replied “its already Trademarked, my man”. So I then ensure him that no matter what name it had I would be more then happy to carry any Almo products he came out with but I will admit that I was skeptical. Then it was the Fail Safe with its Scary Cary and now it’s the DCT with it’s solid feel and hot face… I said to myself …. The FS2 will definitely get the hype but there is no way it will be able to keep up with the original FS (one of the top 4’s in my book).
I had a chance to stop by a friends shop today…. some of you may know him, Ken Husvar who runs Victory Custom Golf (great guy btw)…. But he had one of the few Prototype Fail Safe 2 heads in his shop shafted up with the Aldila VS Proto 60 S. Now with his shop being right on a driving range and the weather breaking in the 70’s, there was only one option for me. Ken grabbed a small bucket and we headed out to the grass area with some long tee’s to do some testing.
Now about me… I don’t claim to be the best golfer in the world and don’t have as much time (church, family and a lot of work) to get in as much golf and practice as others, so my golf game stays on a up and down level but every year it takes a step further in the right direction. With that being said, I expected to have a time warming up from hardly hitting any balls over the last 6 months and my SS usually drops to around 96-100 this time of year (end of season, its around 104-107ish) so realistically I see my drives start out around 235-250 and then slowly climb to around 260-275 for the last 2 years. To put it in a nut shell, I didn’t expect much out of the test but to get some feel, launch, and spin ideas on the combo.
Now that you know what I expected of the FS2 and of my swing its time to give you the results….
I started swinging and the balls started flying….. Around the third shot with this combo, I got a mid/high launch that kept carrying across the range, when the ball finally started coming down it hit the net about midway sending a nice impact ripple across it. I seen the 250 marker in front of it and turned to Ken asking how far it was to the net, to which he replied “265 yards”. I try to think realistically so I thought that it had to be a little off which I’m guessing we can take a good 10 yards (possibly where I was standing…etc) but that would put me hitting the net midway at around 255 and if you factor in the next 5-10 yards it would have flown and adding a good 10 yards of roll then we’re looking at a 270ish to 285ish shot and I will add that my swing speed isn’t up to snuff… maybe faster then usual but definitely not the 107ish range at this time. So I keep pounding balls and working the mind to see what this head/shaft combo is producing and keep hitting them out there around 250+ . So here is what I came up with (considering my swing and attack angle)…. the face is definitely going to be HOT, the launch isn’t going to be low like the DCT or Bangster but it will not be anywhere as high as the original Fail Safe or the BOM… so I will say the head is a healthy mid launch with mid/low spin. Now the feel of the head is similar to the DCT but actually feels a little more “crisp”, kinda like a cross with the Bangster…. So to put it in my terms, it feels very SOLID. You will be able to rate this head as one that offers a lot of forgiveness off heel and toe shots as I was keeping a good tight pattern (except a few terrible swings) and that included some good heel and toe hits. This combo gave me a good mid to slightly mid high launch that climbed fairly quickly, holding a nice mid/high carry position that didn’t drop out of the sky but came down at an angle that game me a good 10-15 yards roll (when I could see).
If I were to rate drivers on feel, distance, forgiveness, and confidence then I am going to go on record as saying that this will be one of the hottest heads for the ‘07 season (in the component industry) and will be brought up on the boards as a great head for years to come.
So I was wrong again and I believe this head will live up to the HYPE….. Long live the Geek Nation.
Solid Rock, how is the FS2 driver compered to the DCT? which one is longer? Straighter? I have a slight fade, I want to correct it, which driver do you think can help me more? Thanks.

The FS2 is known to create more back spin over the DCT and offers alittle more forgiveness so I would give the FS2 the edge.
Asked my cousin to get one for me even if I have not seen or hit the FS2 yet...I'm really banking on your (solid rock) review and the others who really like it and really rave about it!
They say its even better than most OEMs out there?!
Received my Geek Fail Safe II 10.5/UST ProForce V2 66 R/Golf Pride DD2 Saturday (7/14/07). I've been working on a fence project so did not get to hit my new driver till yesterday (Wed.) I booked a tee time and went to the course an hour early to hit a bucket of range balls before the round. Even took my old driver as backup.
Looks: This is a deep face driver that is a dark greyish black color. The face has that black smoke finsh and this head looks great.
Matched with the V2 shaft and DD2 yellow and black grip it was ....... well ...you look marvelous.
Play: Set up was square (yea!). Due to the large cub head size this is a very confident looking club. I must admit I like a taller face instead of a long toe to heal faced club. I tend to miss up and down rather than toe to heal.
Ok here are the stats. I hit 11 of 13 fairways today normally I hit 51% of the fairways. On 18 I missed by only 18 inches. On 10 with a mouth full of hot dog I put a terrible swing on the ball and topped it left. I usually drive the ball with old gamer about 220-230. Very rarely I will clock one 250-255 yards. Longest drive of the day 280 on slight up hill fairway honest. I had three more in the 250-260 range all where over 230. So yes the first round was longer than my old gamer.
Sound: The sound is about the same as my old gamer a 1999 Ping TiSi and just slight softer than my cart partners Taylor Made SuperQuad. So I don't really agree with all this silent stealth bomber reputation that been going around the forums. It is just not a hollow aluminium soft ball bat load sound like so..so many of the new moi big headed drivers being built by the OEM's.
Feel: I have spent a month hitting every driver at the big box retailers into the simulators. Only a few driver heads had a feel close to the solid lively feel of FS2. The MacGregor NVG2 was the closest but not as lively. The solid feel of the old Callaway FT 3 was also close. If you have hit those clubs think a degree or two better to get to the FS2. The V2 shaft is a perfect match for me. It is smooth, loads easily, yet solid feeling when I want to go after a drive and the DD2 grip is a good balance of firm yet soft feel.
One note this seems to be a low launching head and matched with the V2 - non high launch shaft this is a boring - penetrating launch. So if you looking for a high launch then you may want to get get the next loft up or match with a higher launching shaft or the high launch verision of the V2. On my old gamer a lower tee high worked best and produced a high launch. The FS2 will still perform well even at a low tee height but teeing higher and moving it more up in your setup will enable you to hit a higher ball.
One finally thought " Cup Face" I truly believe that Cup Face done right is the new wave of driver/fairway design and the Fail Safe 2 and Steve Almo again are leading in this innovation.
Way to go Geek-O-Man. I've just been Geeked. Hey Steve how about an all beta-ti cup face fairway wood?
