I bought a 10.5 degree, D bias, with the Adila regular flex shaft. Played with it for the first time yesterday. I constantly fight a slice off the tee, so I was hoping this club would help. Now I hadn't played in about 4 months so I was a little rusty. My usual score is around 98-100. I didn't get to take it to the range prior to playing with it so the first nine was a learning experience. I had hit a few balls in the backyard with it and the slice had become a fade, so I was looking forward to getting out on the course. What I found during the first nine holes, was that if I really try to kill the ball, I hook it left. If I swing 80-85% it goes right down the middle of the fairway. Scored a 54 on the fron nine, while I was working this out. Back nine was a much better score of 44. This was pretty good for me as I have been struggling to break 90. I get close occasionally, but have yet to get into the 80s. Going out again tomorrow and hope to put two nines back to back with the same success I had on the back nine yesterday. I hit more fairways than ever before. I am hitting it longer than the TM Ti360 I have been using, but I'm not sure it's carrying farther, just getting more roll in the short grass. SO far I'm really happy with this club.
I love this driver. I got one off Ebay a month ago for $180 w/ Speeder 757 tour spec stiff. I am an Ebay junkie and have a G2 w/ NV65 and Cleveland Comp w/ PL 65 and the R5 blows them away. Granted I don't know if it is the head or the shaft, but this combo rocks. It has a more piercing trajectory which gives me added yardage w/ roll included. I do like the Ping w/ the NV65 but I hit more fairways w/ the R5 and speeder. This club will be in my bag for a long time!!!
It's an okay driver. I can't really vote on it yet, since the launch monitor was not working last night at the store. The head feels a bit too heavy for me, but the shaft felt very nice (Mitsubishi Rayon R flex). I wanted to try a stiff shaft, but the regular seemed a bit stiff enough. I don't know exactly what the ball flight was, but I can speculate that I hit a lot of slices and fades - this is based purely on feel. I had a hard time getting the face to close at impact.
More variables, I don't know how the wieghts were set (draw, fade, neutral), but they looked the same, so my guess it that it was neutral. What I would like to try is that Mitsubishi Rayon in another head, preferable weighing less and try that out.
"Granted I don't know if it is the head or the shaft, but this combo rocks."
My guess is the shaft - as a fellow ebay junkie I made the mistake and sold my old Callaway Fusion with 757 in search of bigger and better things and have regretted it ever since (there is a reason older drivers with Speeders still get a premium).
I tried two R5 with different shafts 10.5 degree N (Grafalloy Blue and YS6 - both stiff) and could not find consistency with them. Even with the Neutral bias I still hooked the ball if I went after it too much (I know that is me not the club). They seemed to set up closed for me and I had to consciously open the face at address.
I have now moved on to an Adams 460d set up Neutral and I can hit this straight to a fade. Great underrated driver with the right shaft. ($95 new with NV65s!)
How would you rate the R5 in terms of distance off the tee? What would you say is the longest driver out there?
Also, what kind of shaft would you recommend for me? I average about 295-300 off the tee with 280 being carry. My ball speed is anywhere from 161-167 MPH.
i recommend the graffaloy proto nt comp try the 65 gm x flex . awesome shaft with boring trajectory and feel. at $79 cheaper than the vs aldila and diamana with similar performance. i hit 11 out of 14 fairways today and my misses were in the second cut.
This is the nicest driver I have ever struck in 7 years of playing the game.
After failing in 2 previous attempts to replace my Burner Steel 250, I have finally found the big driver love I've been looking for in the R5 dual N 10.5° with stock stiff shaft. I still crank a push once in a while, but that is mainly incomplete rotation on my part.
I will replace the grip, I may replace the shaft, but this club is a blast to hit and will be in my bag for a good long while.
A follow up:
I did replace the stock grip with a Winn AV17 mid-sized (I left the shaft as it was) and the club is treating me better than ever. The easier and lighter I keep my hands (easier to do with new grip), the more this club does the bombing for me. When I catch one clean on the upswing, the ball takes off like a rocket and carries 250. When I catch it more level, it bores through and still carries 235. Toe hits lose less than 10% of standard distance. I can't say enough good things about this club.

Ditto everything you said, my friend. I picked up a new r5 Dual on Ebay a couple of weeks back (for $109!!!), and this club is awesome! My golfing buds love hitting this club ... in my opinion, that is the ultimate compliment!
Thanks, Taylor Made! Why would I even want an r7 with an r5 in the bag?
I replaced my T.M. R540XD with an R5 D 9.5 Aldila NV65 S last year. On well-struck drives, there isn't much of a difference in distance. However, on mis-hit drives the R5 is much longer with less dispersion. As some have noted earlier, the sound could be a bit better, but that's easily forgotten when you're hitting more fairways. I would recommend buying one with a full degree less loft than you are currently using. The R5's do tend to have a higher ball flight.
Huge fan of the R5 neutral 10.5! Have added an NVS regular shaft. At the age of 61, I'm
hitting drives that are longer and have more consistancy that I did as a 50 year old!
The current stage of technology sure is giving us seniors a "breath of golf life"!
So happy with this club, I bought a back up. Never been that sold before.
One negative - I read that the "weights" in the back are merely cosmetic, that most of the weighting in the R5 is internal. I wish they didn't do that, but it's a great club nonetheless! Also - the clubhead is hideously ugly, but I can live with it!

I actually read on another post that by using a heat gun you can actually loosen the weights and replace them with "real" weights like the R7 uses. Not sure if this is true, but not sure why someone would make that up!
