The 510 TP is the best Taylor Made driver I've played to date. I haven't tried the r7 nor the r5 but I'm a former owner of a 320Ti and have tried the 540XD and 580XD in addition to the 510 TP. When I made my last driver purchase, it ultimately came down to this driver and the 983K in which I chose the 983K.
The main thing I like about this driver is I think the head size is perfect. I rate the 983K 4 stars (Birdie) mainly because I wish that driver were 390 cc's like this one. I find the head size gives me great confidence and I don't think I ever hit a shot off of the toe or a sky with this driver. The head size also isn't too big like the 580XD. I think 390 cc's is the perfect head size for a driver.
It was actually a close call between the 983K and the 510 TP but ultimately, I chose the 983K because I got a little more distance. I am a fade hitter and hit a pretty consistent fade with the 510 TP. All in all, I think the 510 TP is a great driver and would definitely recommend it.
I moved from the 510TP to the R7 last June. Immediately I got 5-10 extra metres with the R7 at the range. In my mind the R7 is simply the 510TP head with weights but my 510TP is still the best feeling driver I've ever hit. Whilst the 540 and 580XDs can have a 'tinny' sound.
I find the 510TP gives me a soft yet solid sensation on impact. The 510TP is an excellent driver but the golfer who has tendency to leave the ball out to the right may benefit from a head that's more closed.
I also concur with Victory on the head size. Just make sure you've got the right shaft.

if you like the 983k driver so much i think you should try the taylor made r7ht. i had been usind the standard r7 tp driving until last week taylor made sent me a r7 tp(shallow faced) driver. i believe it is similar to the ht, although taylor made will not release the ht in a tp version like the stnd. r7 was. at this time i only know it has been released to us taylor made players. what i noticed was the face on my r7 tp (shallow face) just like the r7 ht is very similar to that of the 983k if not almost exact. i really think you should give the r7 ht a swing. i never though i would ever take my r510tp out of the bag last mach until TM sent me sent me the r7 tp's to replace them, & just when i never though id take my r7 tp out of my bag this new shallow faced r7 tp has given me added workability & more forgiveness. but let me tell you that i dont talk up taylor made because i play there equipment on tour, i do have 2 of the new 905s drivers that i wanted to try out but they dont come close to the r7.

in 2004 i played on the NGA Hooters Tour & 6 Canadian Tour events. 2005 i will be playing a full season on the Cleveland Golf Tour instead of the NGA Hooters Tour due to the fact the CGT is based out of MA where i am from. i will also play in 2 PGA & 3 Nationwide Tour events in which i have exemptions into. i will also try to monday qualify for as many PGA/Nationwide Tour events as possible & play in the state championships in MA, CT, RI, NH, & any professional events in which they hold during the year. prior to turing pro i played 4 years of hockey in the LA Kings organization where i had a knee injury & realized golf held a more rewarding future & it was what i wanted to do.
Sounds like an interesting summer. Which PGA and Nationwide events do you have exemptions into?
buick championship in cromwell ct @tpc riverhighlands, D. Bank Championship in norton ma @tpc boston. the nationwide exemptions i have are for the bmw charity classic @the cliffs & im waiting on 4 others due to schedualing conflicts.
