I'm going to Disney World in September with the grandkids, but hope to play a few rounds between visits to the park. My search on the net has led me to think that Southern Dunes in Haines City would be an awesome choice. Is anyone familiar with the course, or do you have any other recommendations for courses in the area?
I have played Southern Dunes but it was so long ago. The Disney courses I palyed and Lake Nona were great, althought Lake Nona is private. Try the Disney courses.
I played disney last year and they do have nice courses and a lot of wildlife so it is cool. The only course of theirs I did not like was lake buena vista because it had too many condos and was not in the same shape as magnolia, osprey, and the other one which i forgot the name. I thought lake buena vista was a significant step down from the others

The Grande Pines course at the Marriot resort in orlando is by Steve Smyers also, same as the Southern Dunes that you speak of. I have not played southern dunes but i HAVE played Grande Pines and it is a great course. I was there last new years and played there and also the Faldo School 9 hole executive course.
I've played Southern Dunes many times. Awesome course! You won't regret playing it. Personally I think its better then Disneys Palm or Magnolia courses. Give "Falcons Fire" a try too. Living here in Orlando has one great benefit: Lots of GREAT courses to play!!!!!!!
In my opinion, the best courses to play near Disney are The Panther and The Crooked Cat, both at Orange County National. It's very close to Disney (right off of 192 on Avalon Rd), and they offer some of the best practice facilities in the area as well. Check it out at: www.ocngolf.com
You might also want to try Highlands Reserve in the same area.
