My Girlfriend and I have been planning a trip to the Orlando area sometime late April or early May. This is intended to be primarily a Disney/Universal/Seaworld trip, however it was actually her that suggested I try to take my clubs. Due to the fact that there will be a lot crammed into the time that we're there, if I get a chance to get some golf in, it will probably only be a single round.
My question is, where should i try to play?
We may be staying with a friend in Lake Land and renting a car anyway so, a little travel into Tampa is not a problem. I've made a short list of potentional courses and am looking for some feedback. Here they are in no particular order.
Weston Innisbrook
TPC Tampa Bay
Champions Gate
Any of the Disney courses
Mystic Dunes (don't know much about it but thought i'd add it cause of the proximity)
Thanks for the link Lefty, lots of great info about area courses. I guess what i'm looking for is Opinions from fellow GRers about the courses. so I should pose a new question, If you could play one round in the Orlando/Tampa area where would it be and why
I just got back from a trip to Brooksville, FL, which is just north of Lakeland. If you have a free day, play the two courses at World Woods. 36 holes of world class golf for $160. Great golf... great value
Over the weekend, The Golf Channel aired a Shell's Wonderful World of Golf that was played in 2002 at World Woods. Phil Mickelson vs. David Toms, and the players raved about the course. Some of the employees there told me that from time to time, Tiger, O'Meara, Janzen and some other tour players take a ride over from Orlando to play World Woods.
I've played all the disney courses; actually won a two man scramble at osprey ridge with -15 legit score. played world woods in brooksville, innisbrook, tpc, tampa palms was also nice course; rating of 74.4.. its pretty tough.. i play at bloomingdale alot. Lee janzen's a member out there.. its also a tough one. plays 7169 yds from the tips...
Orange County National, again. I can't say that I have a large amount of experience in the area, but can't imagine much better than Panther Lake at OCN. I also played Eagle Trace which is about 20 minutes north of Orlando and it is great, but out of the way. I got a glimpse of Mystic Dunes because once I went on one of those time-share trip things (you get great rates at a property on the condition that you go for a few hours to see this time-share property, then they deal you down and get really mad when you say you don't want to do the time share...). Anyway Mystic Dunes is quite a property also; though I never played it, it looked great as we toured the property. But my vote is still Orange County National. Good proximity to Disney, and all the golf course you can handle. If it was good enough to host Q School two of the last 3 years, it's a good enough course for anyone!
Ok so, I've cut the field to three choices (after much deliberation)
Although money is not an issue (reasonable green fees of course) I am including the posted fees for the dates we are travelling...
$77 Orange County National - Panther Lake
$105 36 holes World Woods
$105 Disney's Osprey Ridge, OR $79 Palm
