My mum, dad, brother and I are going to Orlando on a golf holiday in October (fingers crossed on the hurricanes) and I've been assigned with golf course finding duties. Can anyone recommend any good courses in the area? I've so far found Orange County National which looks pretty good and Bay Hill would be interesting if we can manage it. Any more for any more? Pretty much money no object on the green fees (within reason - ie if it's $1,000 per head, that would be a bit much).
I went to Orlando last year with my wife for our 5 year anniversary and she even let me go play a round of golf while there. Here are some websites that might help.
The first 3 links might help you get a nice idea of what kind of courses are in your area and what reviews have said about them.
The last link, golfnow.com is a list of courses that participate in the area for discounted rates. That's how I got my round of golf when I went. I paid around $30 for a course that normally charges $80 or so (Hawk's Landing - nice course). Their discounted rates are nice, but if you sign up for the e-mails, you get a limited amount of tee times sent every day with even better rates. For example, Hawk's Landing may only have 1 tee time per day in the e-mail, but it might be $29 instead of $39 ($39 being the regular golfnow.com rate). Either way, that site has pretty good rates.
That's one of the things I liked about golfnow.com. They have courses that are private or you have to be staying at their resort in their list. And as far as I am aware, you can play those courses if you purchase your tee time on golfnow.com. They have a similar site here in Texas where there are a few private courses listed and you can play those private courses if you purchase your tee time on their site.

both Champion's Gate and Falcon's Fire and found them both to be excellent.
I've played Orange County National several times and heartily recommend it. There are acomodations near the clubhouse and you can play the Par 3 course for free as an on property guest. The two long courses, Crooked Cat and Panther Lake, are true tests of golf and quite picturesque. Go to their website and check it out. Of course, it doesn't hurt that my wife and I have two felines in the house, either.
I have played the Panther Lakes course at Orange County National and it's all the golf you'll want - tough but fun. I also played a course outside Orlando, about 30-45 minutes north called Eagle Dunes in Sorrento. It's a hidden gem, but a bit out of the way. A friend of mine is a former local pro who now lives in Orlando and he said Metro West and Falcon's Fire are sweet.
Bay Hill is private, you'd have to call them to see if there's a way you can get on. Eagle Creek is a great course as is Reunion. I haven't played the disney courses, but I hear great things about Osprey Ridge. Others that are good:
Falcons Fire
Celebration
Champions Gate
And, if you're willing to drive a bit, World Woods.
Thanks for all of your suggestions. Ended up playing at Panther Lake at OCN (crooked cat was closed), Falcon's Fire, Osprey Ridge at Disney and Southern Dunes. All were great courses. Disney one was I reckon the best layout, but OCN pipped it overall on condition. Then Falcon's Fire and finally Southern Dunes. Great fun and good weather too which was nice.
I travel to Orlando with a group of 16 golfers every spring. We have played most of the courses in the area...and there are quite a few. Orange County National is a great place to play, and has the biggest practice facility in the state of florida. Championsgate is a premier facility...has 36 holes, and will treat you like a king. Celebration is a fun and challenging course, which is kept up well. Eagle Creek is a great track, as well as Timacuan. Other recommendations include Southern Dunes, Mystic dunes,Metrowest, and Grande Pines. Try a site called golfpactravel.com...they will send you a free catalog with all the courses!

I live a couple of miles from Eagle Dunes and it is a nice course...and if you are going to be in the area play Black Bear...if you are staying in Florida for more than a couple days why not go up to World Golf Village in St. Augustine?....
