Happy Birthday, Queen Elizabeth!

The British Monarch is 80 years young today. I know the monarchy is not popular in all corners of the UK, but I like her for her connection to the courageous days when she and her parents did NOT leave London for safer quarters during its bombing in WWII. Long Live The Queen.

Nice post Jim . The Queen is amazingly (physically... ) fit for her age . Although I`m not a fan of the next generation, she however exudes a certain no-nonsense, no-fussing, selfless quiet classiness about her that is nowadays lacking!

Good to see her walking about Windsor town itself, (seem to recollect you previously mentioning your Windsor visit here at golfrewind Jim ) It`s a great place, lots of atmosphere, good shops, great restaurants, brilliant theatre...and a rather good race horse track too.... I go to Windsor a lot, very lucky that way

Good memory, C-B-C! Yes, Mrs Somebody and I visited Windsor in 2002, on a side trip during a vacation in London. The Royal Standard was flying that day, so we know the Queen was on the grounds. (Was hoping for a spot of tea with her, but no such luck: I hear Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl, but she doesn't have a lot to say.)

With the help of our Windsor Castle Official Guide book, I remember the Grand Vestibule, with its artful arrangement of arms, and, most impressively (to me) the musket ball that killed Admiral Nelson on the day of his greatest triumph; the Queen's Guard Chamber, with the bust of Churchill dutifully inclined toward the throne; and the general magnificence of the State Apartments.

St. George's Chapel was similarly overwhelming for Anglophiles like us. I lack the time and the eloquence required to describe this beautiful place, but I will say that it was an incomparable experience to observe the burial sites of so many monarchs, including Henry VIII, Charles I, and George VI.

Thanks for giving me an excuse to remember a delightful day!

The Queen is a great tourist $ earner, so she pays her way. Sadly, her only weakness was her breeding skills, produce successive litters of inbred time wasters.
