Off-the-cuff then, can you guys ID the object in the image? What do you think it is?

* Closest (not-having-known) answer wins an African menhir (air/sea freight excluded)
* If you happen to know, pse 'hang 5'?
It's easy to say it's from space, the ocean, or the animal kingdom- but I have a strong feeling it's a microscopic image of something very simple. No one will get it unless they've seen it before or research. I'm sure it's something very simple that's been magnified a gazzilion times.

There is some sort of thin "wire-like" appendage that protrudes vertically from that opening if you can see. This, I believe is the key- what has this? I still believe it's something we see alot of in some degree. This "appendage" kills some theories I think
I know this is NOT the answer, but doesn't it look like an owl being born? Look at the opening- the right side is the head, and the left looks like a wing. Weird.

something to do with an atomic bomb then? Is it an atom being split?
or maybe you are talking about the mushroom cloud an atomic bomb makes, so maybe it is some sort of fungus.
my first guess would have been some sort of nut.
