Darnit. Just thought of this thread since I can't start one with "Hole in One Today"!!
Friday, had two spin right into the direction of the hole only to come up short.
First one 3 /4 feet, but the second one was only about 6".
What a thing of beauty. 110 yards. Hit it too long, but it was right over the flag, then it dropped about 12" on the back fringe, which was banked.
Then all of a sudden, it "caught" and spun back on the green. Slowly teasing me as it trickled down to the hole. WAAAAAHHHHHHHHH
GGGRRRRRRRRR
157 yds- downhill hit green one envelope length for a slam dunk, bounced once(right over the left edge of the cup, almost hitting the pin) and stuck about 1.5 feet from cup. Nice tap in birdie
Actually, the closest I have ever come is when I played my first real game of golf on a corse. I hit a 6 iron on a pretty short par 3 (usually an 8 or 9 iron for me now) and it just went perfectly straight, landed on the green and rolled right next to the hole. I, ofcourse, two-putted for a par being my first time playing. It was an awesome feeling, I KNEW I was addicted at that point.
When I was 18 I hit a 3-iron thin from 190. It never got more than 8 feet off the ground , bounced and rolled up and lipped out 6" past. I also stuck a wedge to about 8" from 101 when I was about 15. You'd think I'd have come closer in the 30+ years since.
I hit a wedge, 120 yds, green was soft so it bounced once and stuck 6" from the cup. I was playing with a hottie, she was jumping around and hugging me....
I got up there and proceeded to miss the putt....a tap in and I missed it....worst experience ever on a golf course.
I've been within a couple of feet, but I am pretty jazzed just getting on the green. Sad thing is my wife, kids and me play a exec 9(7 par 3's, 2 par 4's) just about every weekend, and I still can't say I have got any very close
I had to replace a ball mark the was on the lip of the cup... but the ball was about 3 feet away... other than that I have been inside a foot a few times, I want one though...
Speaking of that what do think about the USGA taking away amateur status if you win a prize for a hole in one in a tournament??? I never liked that rule, I knew a guy that was a 15 handicap who won a car in a tournament and had to give up playing in amateur tourneys for a year...

Personally, I would take the car and not worry about it too much.
The closest I've ever been to having a hole-in-one is putting my tee shot on a couple par 4's within 2 ft. Both holes are pretty short. (310 and 265 yards) Both times the people on the greens (Both times I never thought I'd reach the green ) said my ball rolled within inches of going in...On Par 3's I'm not really sure. I know I've put a couple within a few feet but nothing stands out in my mind.
But I did have one time where I could have had a hole-in-one. I was playing and the grounds crew decided to change the pin location between the group ahead of my group. The person ended up moving the pin to the right side of the green. I stepped up and pulled my shot toward the left side of the green, and when I get to my ball I see that it's sitting right where the hole used to be.... :faintthud
The first time I played my current course I hit one to within 18 inches on the 5th. Knocked it in for my first birdie ever. But in my heart I knew it was a mishit and I got lucky - from the short daily tees as well. On Sunday I knocked a 5 iron from the championship tees to 30 inches on the same hole - it was a proper shot so I guess that was my closest (made the birdie putt as well).
