My wife had no interest in golf, she always said it was my private sanctuary. Her sisters are planning on taking lessons and I am encouraging my wife to go. She says she now wants to learn. So my question is- Do your spouses play and did you teach them or did they take lessons?
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TEACH YOUR SPOUSE UNLESS YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTOR!!!!!!!!!
I taught my wife but when it came down to refining, I turned her over to another professional because when eliminating tiny things from the swing, sometimes she thought I was being nitpicky. The other thing is to NOT give her tips unless she asks. The only unsolicited tip to give on the golf course is NICE SHOT!

I would never. We have been married 13 yrs, together a total of 21, i have enough experience to know that I would rather saw off a toe then try to teach her to play golf.
My wife just took up the game...She is very athletic(played volleyball in college), and will be smoking me in no time...
Yeah, like Volleyball is a sport...don't tell her I said that...lol. It'll be our little secret since she thinks volleyball is a MAJOR College sport. I don't even consider my favorite pastime to be a MAJOR college sport...

Aw come on jcgolfpro Don't tell him that! Why should he be any different than any of the rest of us fools that tried to teach his wife the game? I say let him suffer too!
Sorry...by all means. Teach your wives, mistresses and girlfriends. I have a basket case student who I am about to cease teaching because her dad keeps giving her lessons after my instruction and he messes EVERYTHING up. I had her piping the ball and on plane. Now he wants her swinging different because 140 yds for his 12-year old, 5'6", 110lb daughter wasn't good enough with her 7-iron. Her driver was 220-230 consistently. We were moving on to fine-tuning the short game when the rest of the game went from perfect to . Now we are having to rebuild the full-swing when we had the game in a state that would land her a full ride to almost anywhere in the country provided her tourney performance was good enough. She shot 38 playing with me from the white tees (6400 yds) which would get her in ANYWHERE as a freshman if she could do it in tournament play. Oh well...my rant is over.
I think my fiance thinks of my golf rounds as escapes from me. She always lets me play, and then she calls the girls to go shopping.....Needless to say we have less money when the day is done.

When I started out, I took group lessons through the local community college. I then took a few private lessons from the golf pro (a friend of Forged's) who taught the course.
Forged has been my main instructor. He is ever patient and supportive. It is usually when I am frustrated that I take his tips as nit-picky. I have learned to just take a deep breath or take a break. I enjoy the time with Forged and look forward to our lessons. I'm very thankful that this has worked out so well. :nodsmiley (Forged does have a good track record - he taught me to water ski.)
My lovely and everloving better half does play. She decided to take up the the game about 3 years ago. A young man that works for her, His father is Head Pro/Director of golf at a resort here and she took lessons from him. We go to the range and she does like for me to help her. Of course that is mostly in the form of "When you top the ball, what does David tell you" When you hit behind it before, What were you doing wrong?"
I also talked to her instructor about the drills he has her do so i can only re-inforce what he has her doing.....Its safer that way........and i have to hit right next to her at the range so i can lend support with the obligatory "GREAT SHOT"
I love my Stephie dearly, and she has come a looooooong way since she took up the game.
When we got marred 30 years ago, I got my wife a used set of women's clubs at a garage sale. When I showed them to her, she replied "better sell them, I'll never play that stupid game." After meeting a number of guys whose wives play, I consider myself lucky for heeding her advice.
