Match Play v. Competitions

My partner and I play on a weekly basis. The rounds are at times competitive and at times not. We might have a small bet on some holes, but there is nothing really at stake.

My question is - does participating in local competitions (our club, for example, has Friday doubles matchplay) improve your game? or does it put more stress on you to "do things right" under pressure and therefore mess up your game.
...after all, we all know that when you play the game of Golf without stress, with a "I'm here to have fun" attitude - you play well (...at least I do).

I enjoy playing in my club matches as it puts that little bit of competitive edge to the game. Just playing with friends is great but you do that any time, comps match u up with other players that u dont know and unsure of there style of play.

ANY GAME OF GOLF IS ENJOYMENT FOR ME COMPETITION OR FRIENDLY.

match play is a hoot. the pressure just keeps building as the match progresses, plus any real competition helps your game and really shows you what you need to improve upon,ie. mental, strategy, course management, swing, etc.

I like match play better, to me it's more fun- even though I nearly always choke around the greens in the most important holes.
And you don't have to worry if you have a bad hole(Well not as much as in stroke play anyway).
It makes me try harder too, because you know where you stand in the game, yeap... match play is much better
