I am rather new to the golf scene compared to most of the people on this web site. I am amazed with the knowledge most people have, and how nice most people are at taking the time to write proper replys. What I want to know... Is it really that hard to shoot under par or get into the low to mid 70's. How long did it take you to shoot under par? My goal is to do it once in life. To me if you can't beat the golf course once in your life, then you have never beaten the game.

First, regardless of what you shoot.....you can never beat the game. That doesn't stop us from trying though!
Obviously it's harder for some than others to shoot the scores you mentioned. I don't know of anyone that has been able to shoot scores like that without extensive practice and/or experience.
Personally, it took me 3 years of frustration and an intense week at the United States Golf Academy to be able to shoot par for the first time. Now if I could only do it more often!

I have been playing for about six years and i am a decent player, not great, not bad, mid 80's consistently. but i have yet to shoot a round under par. It really depends on how much you are willing to practice. However, i think the most important key to playing your best golf is going whenever you can. This is where you are going to learn your strengths and weaknesses. I know at least for me, i don't play the same on the range as i do on the course. I do not belong to a club and i do not have a steady job since i am only 14. So basically to be able to shoot in the 70's you will need to be very committed to getting better and play as much as you can. It is my GOAL to sometime in the future consistently shoot high 70's, but isn't it everyones goal to shoot in the 70's consistently?
I have shot par once in my life. I do break 80 but the skill it takes to not make critical mistakes eludes me for the most part. I did it 2 years ago and have not duplicated it, although I have chased it down to the final few holes a couple of times since.
It is easy to shoot par. I do it all the time. On most par 72 courses, I am usually under par until about the 15th hole It is those 15 strokes after that that kill me
the most important factor in shooting the lowest round you can is not a club in your bag, or your talent (although it doesn't hurt to have a tiger like game ) but your mind set. you cant get flustered after you hit a bad shot, you have to let it go and just concentrate on your next shot. Easier then it sounds and anyone on here will tell you the same thing and i am sure you know it also.
I've been trying for 35 years and still have not , and probably will not, ever shoot par on any course. Not enough time to practise and the tendency to really blow up on one or two holes per round usually are the reasons. Family time is also important!! I'm still happy and enjoy the game and will set sights on the elusive par round .
