One guy I play with swings like he hates the earth. I cannot imagine his back not hurting all the time. I am functional, I have been working towards textbook, I doubt I well totally get there but i have seen improvement.
My dad says i swing like Furyk. Enough said. However, i can still make it effective, so, I think i found my category. Hey, i hit one from 120 to 8.5 inches last round!
I too would be in the "other" category if there were one. In the last week I've been rigorously studying Hogan's book so I've made changes in my grip, stance, backswing, and everything else that involves the golf swing. So I guess I'm trying to be textbook but at this point I'm in the comicbook genre.
My swing is certainly textbook, due to the way I've been coached, though I've yet to get any consistency in the results, as I've a tendency to look up, causing a thin, or maybe a rushing & loosing rhythm, which can have varied results, including coming in heavy & being slightly fat, which when the ground is hard means a loss of yardage.
Swing is one thing, but if you can't be consistent or have a comfortable tempo in the swing, then its all for naught.
I joined up with a couple of local players, when I started my second 9 at the local 9 hole course & both of them had slightly odd swings in one way or another. The difference was they were consistent in the results, which was rewarded with balls that generally were getting them better scores. OK they complimented me on my putting & to be honest I did some fantastic putts that day & my bunker shots were particularly good that day, one bunker shot rolled along the rim of the cup, which would have made me a birdie on a Parr 3 eighth hole. Although they gave me that hole as a birdie I recorded a Parr on my scorecard, as I'd only be cheating myself to have allowed excellent shot to be recorded as anything other than the near miss it was.
Anyhow, getting back to swings, I was doing some lovely practice swings, which again was complimented on, but, I need to be getting the rhythm & tempo right.
OK, admittedly I have a slight hook, which after some study by my coach isn't to do with the back swing, or the return to the ball, but to do with the follow through, the solution to which both of us have been working on & I've noticed a marked improvement to do with tempo, follow through & maintaining a steady grip tension, that isn't too firm.
It gets the job done, I've been told it's very smooth, I just wish I could hit the ball farther though...I stay out of trouble for the most part...but not the longest and sometimes I'd like to he a ripper...

A ball left short of the hole on the fairway, is better than one thats over shot the green & in a hazzard/ out of bounds/ level & in heavy rough.
It was great up until a year ago. I put the clubs down and did not pick one up all year, last year. This year I said I was going to play more, The swing is and needs
I cant see it so to me its textbook. It feels it to. To others who watch it, well they never say, but when I force them it seems to be nice but far from textbook in their minds. For some reason the ball does not act like my swing is textbook either. Either I am fooled or I need to find a way to help everyone else and the ball see what I know.

My swing is borderline textbook, so I'll say functional. I can't see it, but when I taped myself once my swing looked pretty good! It's just the results that aren't great.
