Keeping cool on the course

now that the heat is really gettin up their here in michigan now, i was trying to think of ways to keep cool on the course. I was thinking about just maybe taking a towel dampening it and then just keeping it on my neck between shots or whatnot. What do you guys do to stay cool when its hot?

I've kept some wet-wipes in a plastic bag in the ice-chest. They are cold and good for a quick cool off. You can also dispose of them easily at the next trash can. The scented ones can attract bugs, so the unscented ones might be better.

It's supposed to be in the 90s here next week. I'll be riding, wearing as little as possible and hauling my frozen water bottles.

I wear light colored clothes and a visor. I feel I sweat less with the visor then with a a baseball cap.

Shorts, t-shirt, water, and sweat hehe. It doesn't really get too hot here (Salt Lake). I moved from San Antonio which is much, much worse in the Summer. It isn't nearly as humid here.

It is tough to keep cool when its 90+ degrees. I try to drink lots of water and stay in the shade as much as possible. I also ride vs. walk.

I read that dark blue was suppose to be the best color to wear when it is hot and sunny out. I was in Australia and it was the color of most of the school uniforms that I saw. Don't know why I remember this? I still remember my combination from my locker when I was a sophomore in high school

I've lived in Hot Texas for years, and was a sponsored USCF bicycle racer since 1987, racing 80-100 mile races in 105* weather with no problems. So..........I feel that I'm pretty qualified to take the heat! Here are my tips:

* Get Acclimated. Don't try to walk 18 holes on the first hot day of the year without being in the heat first. Get used to the heat, and what food/drinks help you recuperate in the heat. Sweating is good. But replacing minerals lost through sweating is better.

* Drink water AND an Electrolyte replacement drink. Gator/Powerade is fine if you can't find anything else, but I recommend something better, like Endurox, Cytomax, etc., commonly found in bicycle shops

* Some fruits are good during the summer. I see a lot of people eating Bananas for the potassium replacement.

* Wear a larger hat, with ventilation. The "Tilley" hats are super for this. While they look silly - those funky white hats with the long tails on the sides/back (you'll see these in adventure movies sometimes) work great also.

* Stand/walk in the shade trees whenever possible.

* NO Cotton - Cotton gets damp, wet, and soaked with your sweat. I like different fabrics like microfiber, and other clothing that will allow your sweat to evaporate better.

* I use a wet bandanna wrapped around my neck. This keeps your jugular vein cool, and helps cool you down tremendously.

* After the round, drink a recovery drink with some protein in it. I use the Endurox R4 product. Another option is a smoothie with a wheatgrass shot.

I hope that helps - I've been doing these things for years, and have NEVER had a heatstroke issue. A major factor in dealing with heat is drinking more than just plain water - it's critical to replace electrolytes as well.

When I used to live in Iowa, I kept a large towel and soaked it whenever I could and placed it on top of my head and across my shoulders - much like how a hooded robe looks like. Did a good job of keeping me cool.

Timely topic. I've been invited to participate in a 45-hole charity event in a couple of weeks, and hope its not too HOT. I played 27 once earler in the year when it was cool - no problem. We'll be riding, but I'm just worried about the heat. Tee off is 5:30 am, so the first 18 should be cool. Its the next 27 that concern me.

I'll be drinking LOTS of water, and an occasional Gatorade or something like that. My golf game should keep me in the shade!

Thank god it doesn't get that hot over here, I complain enough during the muggy weather we are having now, which hasn't risen much above the mid 20's (Celsius) ((70 something Fahrenheit)).

The idea of a damp towel is OK, so long as the towel stays damp. How about putting it on your head & keeping it down with a wide brimmed hats (I believe you lot do a good range in those)

I remember filling up a leather cowboy hat with water at an open air music festival in Oxfordshire & placing my head in said hat, which I made my way around the field & enjoyed the music, as the water seeped slowly down my head, was quite a strange feeling having a hat of water sloshing about on my head

Lasted quite a while too before I needed to refill it.

There's nothing like a few cold ones to cool you off and keep a smile on your face. Seriously, though, I usually drink a lot of water before and during the match, always wear a hat, and try to walk under the trees as much as possible. Also if you're walking try to keep a nice steady pace. If you're riding, quit complaining. You've got plenty of shade in the cart.
