I was playing yesterday morning by myself and the first 2 holes my approaches ended up in traps. The 3rd hole, (410 par four- 3 wood is choice because of a deep valley)
I hit my 3 wood a bit left and had a 15ft pine blocking my way to the green, 150yrds away. I hit an 8 iron, drawing but not enough, flew it into another trap. Out of frustration I dropped another ball, hit it pure - it one hopped and rolled into the cup.
Bittersweet, it doesn't count but man what a shot.
Quick Question? If you did this on a Par 3, (played a second ball for fun) and it went in, would you "count it" as a hole in one in your personal accomplishments?
Just personally I mean?
I normally don't play a second ball on Par 3's when I'm by myself because of this.
I'm afraid my ace will come on the "practice" ball.
Congrats man it sounds like one of them shots that you wish you could hit near on every time but it only happens once in a while or in your dreams.......
great, grneyed... bring MORALS into this discussion! *laugh* That's a tough call, though. My only eagle (in memory) was a legitimate eagle, in that all three shots were the shots I meant to play, but it was the second time I played that hole during the round. Going off the back for a late 9, we played 10, 11, 12, there were a few groups backed up on 13 tee, so we went back to the 11th tee, a short trip from tee to tee, and played it again. Hit a big drive, rolled a good sized 3 iron to the back of the green, and drained the 50+ footer down the hill for eagle. I think eagles and aces are special, so I'd probably count it in my head, but not on the card, obviously.
Best "bittersweet shot" I can remember in this particular context is playing alone, I had hit into what looked like an old bunker around the green, but it was grown over with 4-5" grass. I punched my first shot out, and either came up WAY short (I was about 20-25 feet from the hole, I think) or punched it way long. Curious to see if playing it more like a blast shot would work in that situation, I hacked down on it to see what it would do. It flew out of there, and I cringed until it went in on the fly.

And now that we've brought "in your dreams" into it... I had a doozy of a dream the other night...
I was playing an executive course near my old home in Columbus, can even picture the hole, in a way, with my best friend from HS. He hits his tee shot on one of the par 3's, hits about 10 feet short and runs uphill and bends dead center for an ace. While we were jumping around celebrating, it was actually a different friend from high school. I get up to hit, and end up waiting for an almost ENDLESS amount of time for people to clear a fairway that ran right by, or even crossed the par 3, and to get myself ready, knowing I had to match an ace. I hit a high tee shot, drops about 6" left of the hole, and takes a little hop right into the hole. As I celebrated that one, the "friend" turned into my brother. Apparently I was playing in a twosome with three different people. When I woke up, I still thought that I had really made a hole in one!

Did something similar myself last year in Orlando. My wife had a conference so I tagged along and found a links near the hotel, Magnolia something, new but a good track. Was having a great day and came to the last, a long par four, two over. Had about 210 carry over water and 230 to the stick and went with the five wood. Plonked it in the drink, dropped another one to try with a three wood thinking I would drop a ball up near the lake and try and get up and down for a bogey and a 75. You guessed it, holed the three wood! Claimed 74.
When we were kids a mate of mine hooked one in the drink on a par three and holed his next off the tee for a three. Thirty years on he has still not had a real ace.

No, I would not take the second ball as an ace, but in my head I would know I did it.
