The next power hitter
Ever hear of a guy from the University of Kentucky by the name of John Holmes. He is playing, Wed/Thurs, in the Palmer Cup, collegiate version for the Ryder Cup. Local paper has a little write up on him.........
Quote:
Holmes, who plans to turn professional this summer, said his swing speed was 136 mph and his ball speed was 192 mph. For comparison's sake the big hitters on the PGA Tour have swing speeds in the 130s and ball speed in the 180s.
His caddie said Holmes rountinely flew the ball 340 yards off the tee on Wednesday. In his singles match, he cut the dogleg on the 570-yard par-5 hole and had only 160 yards into the green and hit pitching wedge.

Okay.... who will be the first person to do swing speed 140s...ball speed 200s ????

I'd heard John Holmes took **********the pros back in the 70's but that he's since retired and passed away...

First thing I would do is change my name.
I am sure this thread will be issued a warning pretty quickly.
I cannot imagine swinging at the speed, i wonder how long his body will allow him to that.

The first? It's already been done. By the guys that win the long drive competitions... For comparison's sake the big hitters on the LDA Tour have swing speeds in the 140-160 mph range and ball speed in the 210s.
That's not to say this guys isn't amazing... but he didn't invent the 350 yard drive

pga pros do not swing the club 130. tigers swing is around 122, 127 when he goes at it. thie hardest swingers on tour are in the low 120's. not to take any credit away from that guy, but whoever wrote should get their stuff straight before writing it.

Being from Lexington, Kentucky I've heard of this guy and seen him hit the ball and have a few friends who have played with him. I'll tell anyone here that doesn't believe (cause I wouldn't either if I hadn't seen him) but he CAN hit the ball that far and he DOES swing that fast...its unbelievable! The course I play frequently is the home of the Kentucky Open and there is a par 5 there probably 535 yards I'm going to say, little down hill. The guy in the pro shop said John hit to the 140 yard marker.
If you go back and look at the stats (if you can find them) he played in the US Open I think two years ago when he was a sophomore in college and for the first two days led the US Open in driving distance. Unfortunitly did not make the cut.
Just google his name followed by University of Kentucky so you don't get some unwanted google links refering to an adult star. There were a few golf digest articles on him and everything, you can find them on the net.
