I thought so.
And on the same topic...can you take a drop where the ball goes oob, and is that then your third stroke? I read the official rules but I was confused.
I am going to play golf with some co-workers and don't want to look like a moron out there asking them these questions..gotta love message boards
When you hit it out of bounds , you count that shot , add a penalty shot , and hit your third shot from the same place that you hit your first shot . Try to act like cool cause its just part of the game , even tho you are like inside

No, you can't take a drop. As Mr bogey said, you have to go back and hit from where you hit the shot that went OB. To save time, always declare that you're going to hit a provisional ball if you even suspect that your ball went OB or might be lost but not in a hazard. BTW, the best of players often go OB. Nothing to be ashamed of, just keep on playing and don't look back. Best of luck and you'll probably find that some of your co-workers don't know the rules that well either. Hey, even the PGA tournaments have rules officials on site just in case. Have a great round.

I agree with what you're sayin, thinkin... but I think, and we've discussed this here before, in the instance that you don't think it went OB, or you get up to your ball and find it had indeed trickled OB, you should drop and add two strokes (where the "laying 3" mentioned before comes into play).
Which, playing that way brings up an interesting point... If you hit a ball that runs into the woods, which you don't realize is OB until you get up there (lets face it, public courses are way too crowded and slow anyway to worry about hitting a provisional on every shot that gets off the fairway, and definitely too slow to go back and hit again), and you drop couldn't you theoretically drop anywhere (not closer to the hole), considering if you hit a provisional, you'd be laying 3 from a presumably better spot than under the trees? Are you penalizing yourself twice by dropping well into the trees *and* taking your " and distance" stroke as well?
If I hit hit tee shot oob, then hit another off the tee, am I hitting #2 or #3? Like the title says, basic question.
Thanks.
If your 1st goes oob you`ll be taking 3 off the tee, if that goes oob then your next will be 5 off the t, if that then goes oob get your clubs on ebay and buy a crate of stella with the dosh. .

tonyg,
Hey, If I were playing a casual round with some friends or relatives from out of town, sure, speed up play by doing what you say but if you're posting your round for handicap purposes don't do this. It really isn't that hard to hit a provisional ball if you even remotely think you're out of bounds or your ball may be lost. If you find your first shot to be in bounds then simply pick up your provisional and go on with your round. Those are the rules and if you're keeping a handicap I suggest you play by them or your handicap won't mean anything and if you play in tournaments it's imperative to get familiar with the rules and play by them. Have a good one.
