in your opponents? I have noticed this over the years. No matter what kind of competition, this has been a thorn in my side, lol. They just play lights-out, which is good to see and I'm glad for them.
All I can do is laugh I guess and be glad they played well.
Nope, but I do seem to always play to the level of my competition. Unless it's someone I have played with continually over the years, such as friends, I rarely ever beat someone random I pair up with by more than 2 shots....same as I rarely lose to them by more than 2 either. There are exceptions, of course, but playing with someone who is also playing well always seems to lift my game, and likewise, playing with someone who's hacking up the course tends to make me play worse.
Strange, whenever I play with somone, I tend to bring out their bad habits. Like they can be fine on the begining of the front nine, then they slowly start to fade. But then again I also tend to be influenced by other players as well. Like if I play with somone who's really bad, I tend to play bad. If I play with somone good my game tends to, "rise to the occasion".
I played with this guy the other day. I shot 39 the front nine (average) and 52 the back with a ten and a twelve on two par fives. He tried to "save me" and recruit me to his church. Safe to say we both brought out the worst in each other and won't be playing again, church outing or otherwise.
I fully agree that you play to the level of your competition. For years I played with mid to high handicappers. And shot scores to reflect the same. Around 85 to 95. Until 10 years ago I meet my best friend Rob. A very good golfer, averaged around 75 a round. At first he really intimidated me, thus causing me to play worse then ever. I couldn't believe it when he asked if I could play with him the next day. Just playing with him over a few short months brought my scores down in the 70's. And I raised his a few. We both now shoot low 70's, and constantly compete almost every weekend. A few weeks ago, he was on vacation and I went out by myself and was paired with a couple fairly new golfers. Who shot in the 100's. Needless to say, that day was very humbling! I shot a "91". Everything went wrong. The following week with Rob I shot "74". Rob shot "71". I laugh about it, but it isn't very funny at the time.
When I play with good golfers I usually score better, and if I play with the ladies at my club, I play worse.... I also play bad if I don't really like the person or if I'm loosing in a match I get really annoyed.
When I'm playing with people in stroke play they usually play bad, but in matchplay they play good.

are you insinuating that all ladies at your club are poor golfers?

I think you just described me. I always seem to be comparable with my playing partners. Even if they are way better golfers than I am, I hit shots that I normally wouldn't hit. But on the flip side, when I play with players of lesser talent, I seem to forget how to swing a club.
