I am participating in a Long Ball competition tomorrow, I can hit it a long way, Often at this same driving range I get a gallery watching me hit Golf Balls.
So I am hoping I perform well tomorrow.
good luck, but remember to pace yourself and make sure you are hydrated and nurished. Pending on how many guys are there, you might be in for the long haul. Ive done a few and you can see these guys who are just juiced to hit the ball and get the "Caveman" attitude as soon as they get on the practice tees. They go all out and wear themselves down and then come show time, they post some low numbers. Take a look at the long drive record holder, Scott smith, who hit a 539 yrd drive in the quarters and didnt have enough left in him to make it to the finals, if I'm correct, his next longest in the grid was only like 350 and he got beat by a 385 yrd drive and missed the finals.
Good luck Lifeguy!! BTW, is this a qualifier for a bigger contest or a stand-alone competition? What's the prize for winning? It helps us root if we know the stakes........
I competed yesterday, I hit my first 6 balls which were for practice, then I hit my 6 balls that actually count for the competition.
The first 3 in competition I hit absolutely huge, but I missed the grid.
my 4th ball I hit 382 yards, and the 5th I hit 384.
Knowing that the leader was at 408 I really went after one and hit it to some very large hills at the end of the range, but failed to hit it in the grid.
The speculation was that this was by far the longest of the day, but it don't count if it is not on the grid.
This is very hard to do, you have a gallery of people watching you, my hands shaking on the first 4 practice balls, you try to tune everything out, setup then pull the trigger.
The range was set up with just 40 yards of grid, with the wind blowing slightly left to right, but helping.
Since I am left handed I was trying to blast one starting left and hit a draw that the wind would help even more, I started most of my shots about 40 or so yards left and what a turn these made.
Eventhough I did not win, It was the most fun that I ever had.
Yardage was measured from the tee box, they would have a guy stand where the ball would finish and then use a laser yardage finder to measure the distance.
Not sure how accurate this is, but I would say the 384 felt more like 350.
