rulings

i hav some questions on the rulings in golf.

if u hit a ball O.B. on ur drive off. U hav to hit another one of the tee?

If you hit one O.B. wen ur in the fairway or rough do u drop it were you went O.B.?

Can u swing in the sand without touching the sand because i hav seen tiger woods do that before.

Under no circumstances can you club touch the sand in a bunker until impact.

Rule 27-1

If a ball is lost or is out of bounds, the player must play a ball, under penalty of one stroke, as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5).

If you are unsure if it is O/B proceed to rule 27-2 Provisional ball.

First question the answer is yes, you have to hit another one off the tee and if that one ends up in play, you will lie 3. Make sure you are clear on what the boundry of the hole is though. It's only OB if there are white stakes on that side of the hole (or other boundries that are specifically called out as OB like fences, driving ranges, roads, etc.). If it's red or yellow stakes, it's a whole different situation. If it's white stakes I usually play very conservative (ie. use a shorter club that you know you can control. If it's red or yellow, I'll be more aggressive since you can drop at the point of entry in these cases (water or lateral water hazards).

Second question the answer is no, you can not drop the ball where you went OB. It's the same situation as it was when you teed off and went OB. You have to re-hit from the original location (it's called stroke and distance and it applies to all shots that go OB). You take a stroke for the original shot (1), you take a stroke for the penalty (2) and you return to the location you hit the ball from (distance). In other words, you are hitting your 3rd shot from where you hit your first shot. Again, if it's not white stakes then it's a different situation.

Third question the answer is yes, you can swing in the sand as much as you want as long as you don't touch the sand or the ball with your club. You can waggle the club back and forth, you can take full swings to get your tempo right, etc. etc. You just can't touch the sand until your actual shot.

Good luck! Have fun.

Dave

I'm pretty sure off the tee you will lie 4 from where your second ball lands if the first went O/B.
1. First tee shot
2. O/B penalty stroke
3. Second tee shot
Laying 4 from wherever the provisional lands.

But I'm not 100% on that.

You are incorrect. First tee shot counts as 1. Add one penalty stroke and that has you at 2. Hit second shot, actually counts as 3 so you will lying 3 and hitting 4. I think where the mystery comes in for an OB or Lost Ball is that you have to take stroke and distance and some people equate this to a 2 stroke penalty when, in fact, it really isn't. Probably seems like it though. Hope this helps. Have a good one.
