I had a call at work yesterday, any chance I could make it to the club for a 2.35 tee off. Whoosh, I was out the door, rushed home, changed my shirt, grabbed my clubs and hammered it. The guys were waiting on the first tee, a world class slice out of bounds, goodbye new Pro-V, a classic pull shot with a 3 wood found the pond to the left of the green,,,,,lovely. The snap hook I hit out of bounds on the second was quite amazing, its' a wonder it did not make a full u-turn and come back and hit us. That, by far was my worst start in forty years of golf, I was nine over after five holes,,,,,ouch ! By the sixth hole the foreign object in my hands started to feel like a golf club and I finished the nineth with a good birdie. A good ball striking back nine gave me a 3 over 39, any chance of breaking eighty for the fourth consecutive time was long gone. I guess at the start I must have left my brain behind at work, but tomorrow is another day, I will be at the club early working at the practice range and will be ready to " do it " when I tee off. Anyone else had such a horrific start to a round ??
I once played a competition with a member I'd not met before. Teeing off in front of the (not very friendly) club pro, I sliced my tee shot into a bush. Elected to play a provisional ball and pull hooked it out of bounds (and about 25 yards away!). Went and managed to find my first ball (so lying 1). Attempted to move it but couldn't (now lying two). Took an unplayable drop (now lying 3), sliced my 4th right of the green, chipped on and 2-putted for 7. On the second I went slice, shank, fat, pitch, 2 putt for a 6.
The round continued in a sublime to ridiculous fashion. Chipped in for par on the 3rd, took 11 (!!!) on the 4th, then chipped in for birdie on the 5th. And so on and so forth. I eventually shot 99, but won £28 in the 2's sweep. Still my best ever haul from a golf round.
Ok first time out i went and started shootin i get to the green and the flag says hole 6 instead of 1 so i get made as i was dead on but at the wrong hole to find out the hole i needed was about 70 yards to my right so i play it for a bad hole. Then i figured out the set up of the holes and played a good round so all ended good and i did have fun though so i was totally cool with it.
It happened to me last Saturday. Topped my tee shot and first fairway shot, dowhill from there through the first 5 holes. Not my usual solid start. Kept my cool, but politely told the 3 guys I was with that I was going to pack it in after we finished putting to keep from ruining the rest of their round (they were strangers, I joined their group).
They were adamant that I *not* leave - I was really pleasantly surprised at how sincere they were, so I decided to stay. Things suddenly got much better - I sunk a long put for par (on accident, I'm sure), then started nailing my drives. Finished the last 4 holes par-bogey-par-par....what a game
It's happened to all of us. But that out of the car onto the tee box has had mixed results for me. Once, I arrived at the course without about two minutes before tee time so I didn't get a chance to warm up. I got my bag on the cart, accompanied by my playing partners looking at their watches and saying "Glad ya' decided to show up". Then instead of hitting driver I chose my three wood which I striped 270 yards down the middle of the fairway. It was all **** after that but that first shot shut everyone up.
But I've played the first hole well several times after being late or being in a hurry just to be on time.
Then there's been the times where I've pulled, sliced, and duffed.
I'd relate a story about disastrous first holes but I at this point I only have it narrowed down to thirty or forty stories. When I get down to ten maybe I'll start thinking about what the actual worst. Some 10's on the first hole are better (or worse) than others.
