Rule question

This happened to my friend and I over this weekend.
We both managed to find the sand and the 2 balls were within 2~3 inches.
In this case is it ok to mark 1 ball and allow the first person to hit and then replace?

Just curious what the official rulings would be.

TIA

No sir. Read rule 20 (It's a long one). You also must replace it in a condition as near as possible to the original lie.

Your opponent may rake the mess he left before you play your shot. You cannot test the sand in any way either.

I don't have a rule book handy but I do remember that rule 20 was a monster.

THe ruling would be that the farthes must play first. The other may mark wher his ball is laying and after the first player hits the second may rake the sand to "re-create" the origional lie as much as possible and the place the ball.
