Absolutely Fascinating.....

I find it very interesting that so many golfers are influenced by the sound of the ball at impact. I've read numerous threads about the sound a driver makes at impact and how much emphasis some place on that. Then I read reviews on golf balls and am amazed at how many think that some tour level balls are significantly harder than others. I wonder because I read an article a month ago about a magazine that did a trial in which they put ear plugs in several players ears and found that they had great difficulty telling which ball they were playing and which ball had better feel at impact. Often the ball they thought had more feel was not the same one they had chosen just prior to this experiment. Interesting.

An interesting post, I can't say that I have been influenced by the sound at impact but feel is what I look for. I'm probably quite old fashioned but in my humble opinion there was no better feeling than making solid contact with that old Hogan persimmon headed driver that I had for years. I'm not particularly in " love " with the ping sound of the ball off my 460 cc. metal jumbo stick, but we move forward with this great technology we have in the world of golf. I only use the Pro-V ball by Titelist, again in my humble opinion, its' the finest overall ball in the market, I find it very consistent. That being said I have no doubt that I would be unable to distinguish what top line ball I would be hitting merely by the feel at impact ( or by sound ). Opinions will vary, what a dull forum ( or world, for that matter, ) this would be if we all agreed on all subjects.

Sound is very important to me. As poor of a driver as it was (continuous shaft failure) I liked the sound of the C4. Nice thunk sound to it.

Also if a driver has that real hollow tinny sound I won't use it no matter how well I hit it.

go try the Macgregor Mactec...it's so **** loud! tired a few balls with it on a quiet range .. i decided to put it one side and go back to my normal driver... too many gawkers...

for me though.. so long as i can hit it far and straight... i don't really care about the sound ... but feel on impact .. especially good contact ... is addictive and something i strive for to get in every shot... but of course, i'm often being deprived ....

I find it's not just with the driver that the sound is important, but warming up with my wedges on the range before a round, I look for consistent sound at impact, irregardless of the ball flight. Since switching to a Titleist 905(used to have a T.Made 540), the sound(or lack of) is no longer an issue. In fact, people might comment that the ball "sounded " funny off the clubface, but still flies down the fairway. I will admit, certain drivers do sound pretty funny at impact(Adams).
