Just curious to see what type of prgress I am making compared to others that have been where I am tring to get. I played golf for about two years about ten years ago and then started having my two kids and my time got limited so I put the clubs down. I usually shot in the high 90's like 98 on aveage. So I picked the game back up about 8 months ago and upgraded my equiment and this time took the game much more seriously. Mainly the guys I did play with were much better than me with about 8-10 years of practice so I had some catch up to do. Anyway I am shooting anywhere from 91 on a bad day to 86-87 on a good. My best round is a 85. Is this progress good or should I be further along? And this is basically self taught with a few pointers from some more experenced players.
What is the slope or course rating of the course that you normally play. If it is a difficult course (130 or higher slope rating) then you are progressing on average. If the slope rating is under 120 you should be having some low 80s mixed in there. Track your fairways hit, GIR and putts per round. These three stats will tell you alot about how well you are progressing.
The slope at the one's that I play the most is 111,115,123. My last round wet like this 10 g.i.r , 37 putts best as I can remember. About 5 or six putts liped out. I know it's still a miss but those are the strokes I need to get rid of to get to the low 80's That would have put me at around a 85 and I had a terrible 11th hole.(a quad!) That is mainly what I'm trying do right now is get rid of the one or two bad holes that pop up in my round. I figure if I can play a round with few or no misakes I will post my best score.

I wasen't sure. The guys I used to play with are shooting like low 80's so I am just about 4 strokes off from them and like I said they have 10 years on me.
If you're hitting 10 GIR but shooting high 80s, I don't think there's anything wrong with your progress....that said, you should definitely be working hard on your short game and course management skills. 37 putts isn't horrible, but you must have having a few blowup holes a round I'd reckon. Tidy up that scorecard by taking a few less putts and losing the penalty strokes and you'll be sitting pretty. :nodsmiley
If you are hitting 10 GIR and having 37 putts your putting is either not great or you are having trouble getting chips close enough to make a put and get up and down. i think that hitting the practice green will help fix that one for you.

Reason: 27 to 37

27 putts isn't great? 9 under on the putting surface tells me a bad short game isn't the problem. However, 37 putts says your suggestion of work on the practice green is a good one.
So I need to hit the practice green a little more. My chipping is pretty good but I do need to make these putts fall. So no one ever did actually say is knocking off 10 to 14 strokes in a eight months decent? I feel like I am going in the right direction , but I just woundered if was going there fast enough.
Anytime you're knocking strokes off your game it's "decent" but you have to know that 10-14 strokes is a good start. As for "fast enough"........Don't worry, you're doing great, but it'll slow down in a big hurry! Keep up the good work though!
