Playing solo, joining and/or playing through

I had an interesting experience yesterday playing solo. It was pretty crowded and the starter told me to hook up with the 2-some on the 1st tee. Well I nailed my drive and one of the guys insisted that I play through, saying he wasn't any good, didn't want to hold me up, etc. I quickly caught a 4-some who were waiting on a 4-some of ladies who were waiting .. well you get the idea. The 2-some caught me virtually every hole as I was waiting on every shot. I asked again if they'd like to join me (I prefer playing with someone).. they declined, but waved a single through whom I hooked up with. On the 10th tee the 4-some in front of us was waiting to tee off, griping to us about the "so & so women" who've been holding them up. Well the front side, while having it's challenges, is quite a bit easier than the back. If you're a bit crooked on the back you're in for a long day. Well by the 11th green those "so & so women" were about a hole & 1/2 ahead of the studs in front of us. We watched them as they drove from woods to hazard to O/B and back again on every hole never giving a second thought to letting us play through. This usually bugs me, but I was having the round of my life(for those of you who haven't seen it the other half-dozen or so places I've posted it here). The golf and company was good and we had a few good laughs watching the guys in front of us and commenting upon how those "so & so women", now 3 holes ahead of them, were probably still distracting the poor fellows.

Just goes to show you can't judge a book by it's cover. I once made a tee time to be the first group off as a twosome, and when we got to the tee(just after sunup) the starter made us wait for a twosome of old ladies. I was furious as these old ladies hit their ball about 125 yards off of the first tee. Well, lets just say they picked it up after that. We finished 18 holes in 2:45 and they were about 2 holes in front of us. Sometimes you just can't tell who will play super fast.

Since I don't have anybody that I play with on a regular basis I usually play as a single. If I'm paired with somebody else it doesn't bother me at all. In fact I'd had some pretty good times meeting follow golfers. As for slow players ahead of me as long as the course isn't really crowded it doesn't bother me unless they are exceptionally slow.
